    '06 Mex Strat

I want to buy an '06 Mex Strat but I want to make sure it's an '06. How can I tell for sure? What about these serial numbers: MZ3207841? Thanks, John.

to be sure you need to look for the new colors chrome red and electron blue.

MZ6 should be the first part of the serial and they will also have a 60th anniv sticker on the back of the headstock

Thanks a lot. Music store was telling me this was ,as far as they knew, 2006 model because they just got them in. I wasn't taking any chances. Beautiful black with rosewood fingerboard though . But read reviews on '06 models and they have a few updates that I want. Thanks again, John.

You came to the right place to check on it before buying it.

In all fairness, not every music store dude is that knowledgeable. The joker probably made an assumption, without having a clue about serial numbers and such.

The new '06 Mexi-made Standard Strats look like a great deal -- shielding, bigger trem block, gig bag, improved frets ... you are right to want the '06. They sound like a lot of guitar for about $400.

+10. You'll know it's a 06 by a few different things. The diamond plate on the back of the headstock, and the sticker on the front talks about "The ALL NEW Standard Strat". But the key is the diamond on the back of the headstock.

I'll join the chorus of voices saying there is no way in Hades they "just got them in." If by "just" you mean "three years ago," then... well, okay.

Ok, time out. I just read this again and it hit me. Standard Teles aren't offered with a rosewood board. Something is odd here.

I'm confused... Isn't it a strat... or did I miss something

This guy at the music store is O.K. As you said, he is not very knowledgeable when it comes to guitars. He's a drummer. There's a guitar guy there but he wasn't there when I was. Anyway, I didn't live this long being stupid. That's why I came here for positive I.D. Glad I did.
    Thanks again, John.

I've been in a few shops lately that are blowing out their NOS Standard Strats for $349, before they order the '06 w/ upgrades. These guys are at least honest about it though and not saying they're '06 models.

The 06's come with Gig Bags. Did they offer a Gig Bag with it?

I bought a NOS black body/maple 05 Mexi Strat for $299 in Milwaukee. It is perfect. I bought a new molded Fender hard case for $59 and Schaller strap locks for $10. I paid about $384 for everything with the taxes.

Sweet deals on the NOS models are out there; call around.

    Re: '06 Mex Strat

Might be worth it to go NOS if the price is right. Better shielding is only real upgrade to me (labor intensive). I've gotten to where I prefer the old style narrow frets. Bigger trem block probably can be replicated at minimal cost. Gonna replace the PUs anyway so can do shielding then, right?

    The differences are pretty big.

    Med Jumbo frets
The new trem block is the same size as a vintage trem block the older blocks were super thin barely wider than the string holes.

Those 2 upgrades alone make me wanna buy one pop in some Fralins and have a killer for cheap.

    Re: '06 Mex Strat

Marcondo: I've seen nice big trem blocks way, way cheap. Fret size is a matter of taste. Shielding can be done when PUs swapped. If NOs are $125 cheaper, i dunno...

    Re: '06 Mex Strat

The fret size change made me want the NOS, I hate the larger frets. I sold a Les Paul Faded because bottoming out the jumbo frets made the guitar sound out of tune. I play a lot of acoustic and I seem to have the neck "death grip". It's taste I guess.

Wow, those vintage frets are a lot closer together than the medium-jumbos.

A big full sized trem block wont even fit in the older MIM stds the body is routed for the thin tremelos. Look above for the difference..

The routes look identical to me. There's a helluva lot more space in the old style with the smaller block. Plus, look at the orientation of the screw hole and the route.

Callaham makes a special block that fits the older MIM stds its different than the USA vintage sized block.

    Re: '06 Mex Strat

I've just ordered a big block Wilkinson licensed trem by MM that is _supposed_ to retrofit to the older Mexican Standard. It was $30 on eBay. I'll let you all know how it really fits when I get it. I bought it for the pop-in arm, rather than seeking tonal enhancement.

I must admit I just can't get excited about a list of hardware specs, though. I've A/Bed different Fenders of the exact same year and model, and they can sound "chalk and cheese".

Unfortunately (or fortunately), it's the things that _don't_ appear on the spec sheet (like "good piece of wood") that will make or break a guitar for sound.
