    Cheap body blank

I want to build a minimalist guitar on the tune of, oh, about 55 dollars (not including the single GF P90). As I has said before, a neck was given to me, so i don't have to worry much about that. I have access to all the electronic hardware (volume pot and a jack). The point of this theoretical guitar would be to give me a practice shot at guitar building and to let me try out the neck, and a p90. I might also have access to some black walnut i could laminate to the top of what ever the body wood is. Maybe one day i'll get a proper swamp ash body and a refret, but for now i just want to mess around.

    what i'd need:
    LP Junior Bridge ($19)
    Wood (Free?)
    Dream 90 ($35)

So what wood could i get at the hard ware store for dirt cheap and still sound decent? I would be willing to laminate many pieces of wood together but it needs to be a reasonable number of pieces.

yo...i'd get 4 pieces of mahogany, glued together like a packake Norlin LP body, and do a Tele to that MoFo!

or get Pine and do the same thing...[the pancake design JUST to add stability to STORE-BOUGHT wood]

good luck, and dont 4get the pics!

    That's a tough price range!

As long as you know what the neck is like, there's always ebay.
    I'm assuming you have a Fender-style neck...

What is this pancake method you mention?

    do you mean like
    laminated Wishbass "Peanut"

    or like
    Plywood

And me, being les paul illiterate, I have no clue about Norlin guitars.

But yeah I could go with a tele look. after all, i don't already have that shape in my collection.

    Re: Cheap body blank

go to the LES PAUL FORUM [link on this page under those cool old guitars^] and search Norlin pancake...you'll prob get millions of results...

in the 70's (some 80s) Norlin made all gibson guitars....the had a pancake body and a 3 pc maple neck...many hate them, many dont....PAncake is when you get thinner pieces of wood and stack it like pancakes *appx 3/4" thick each piece*....kinda the same thing as ply, but thicker.

    Close Frank,

The sandwich body was gone by about 75, along about the same time they went to the 3 pc maple neck.

It's referred to as a sandwich because it has two pieces of mahogany with a thin maple veneer in the middle.
If you leave the house, you're just asking for it.

For $130, you could get a made SX guitar with body made of Ash...strat or Tele copy, get the neew pickguard/add your own parts, etc. and sell the surplus parts to offset the cost. Of course, what if you liked it as it wa....what would you do then?

I got the wood, it's in the mail.

Has anyone used cherry for an electric guitar before? I hear it is supposed to be like mahogany in sound.
