New Guitar Cable Prices - Woah !

What's the deal since the prices are getting outrageous for some "boutique" guitar cables.

    $2000 for a 20 footer : (scroll to bottom)

    http://www.alessandro-products.com/cables-inst.html

The Monster cables for $45 don't seem so bad after seeing some of the other high-end cables.

I've heard that the gold is no better than the silver ends and as long as it's insulated, you don't need the nuetrix(sp?) or virgin wound silver shielding.

    Your thoughts.... :wail2

That, quite frankly, is a joke.
Ok, so it might sound 'better' and I do appreciate the difference that good cables, be they guitar, mic or speaker cables but how, precisely is one of them better than 200 of the equivalent Piranha cables?

Saying that, if I had a few million in the bank then yeah, i'd use them!

"Silver is the final word in conductor material, being the most musical metal known."

This entire pitch, including the prices, is the stupidest thing I've heard in a long time. And I work in the advertising business.

All you need for superior instrument cabling is low-capacitance cable and a solid connection at both ends. George L's are a good example of this. Everything else people say about cables - time alignment, "double balanced," reduction of "dielectric involvement" - is nothing but voodoo.

If you really want to make a difference, hardwire your guitar to your amp.

Connectors are probably the weakest link in the chain... how some innovative connector technology. Screw terminals anyone?

Yep... I can't tell you how many times I've retracked otherwise perfect guitar or bass parts because I looked down and realized the words "George L" were running the wrong way....

Castles Made of Sand was recorded using backwards cables. The overdubs, anyway. ;)

Man, there's just something about the tone that's different! It's like the cable mojo's flowing backwards or something.

This is ridiculous though, imagine how long Def Leppard could have spent in the studio if they'd had this to 'worry' about as well! And that My Bloody Valentine album would have taken about 15 years to make.

That Iron Butterfly quote was from the Inna-Gadda-Da-Vida album...my dad has that on vinyl...
I still like the Simpsons episode (Bart Sells His Soul) when he switched that into the hymn at church "and now for todays hymn, In the Garden Of Eden"
"Marge, remember when we used to make out to this hymn?"

on topic, though, I twich when I shell out for the Monsters...I couldn't see spending any more than that...though I've been through 3 monster Jazz for paying for one...threir warranty bring it to the store when they die, they'll hand you a new one.

    How much are Monsters?
In the UK (I don't know about the states) Piranha cables come with a lifetime guarantee plus, unlike those funny Planet Waves things (which don't fit into a lot of guitars anyway with their funny locking jack thingie), they've got field-serviceable ends (ie. screw-on) so in a pinch you don't have to find a place to replace it.
The Piranha's are about Ł10 or $15 or so.
I use them for all my guitars and for all my studio kit that doesn't output on XLR.

True enough, but for the money you spend, I'd rather have a cable that didn't die three times.

Re: New Guitar Cable Prices - Woah !

EMG uses 710pF of cable capacitance for their pickup spec. I've measured between 600 and 1000pF in my various 20' cables. Interestingly enough, my coily cable measures at 1000pF.

Here's in interesting quote from an article on cable capacitance:

    ----------------------------

Good audio cables, not just guitar cables, measure out at about 30 picofarads (or 30pf) per foot. The best low capacitance cables are about 15pf/foot, but I expect you cannot buy such a cable for guitar. We'll use 30pf/foot as a representative number. It's surprising that even cheap cables have this capacitance, within a few picofarads, regardless what the advertisements say!

    --------------------------------

Those numbers match up well with what I've measured. Here's the rest of the article. I think it is very good, much better than the hype we get from cable makers. Pay close attention to the part near the end about pickup inductance, cable capacitance, and resonant peaks in the frequency response.

This is also true...I should get around to investing in other cables that won't die as quickly (they all go eventually, from use, or the drummer dropping a cymbal or *someone* dropping it on the lawn and running it over with a mower...) but the Monsters are good for now...I don't beat on them hard, and I have enough spares that if one does go, I can keep playing that day, and hit the local shop the next...

Just came from checking out a new studio. I noticed that all of the cables were made by C.B.I. using Belden cable and Switchcraft ends. C.B.I. even screens the studio's name on them.

On the other hand, C.B.I. makes 36 different grades of cable. One of the engineers told me that they prefer the textile shielding over the much more expensive braided silver shielding for reasons that went over my head ;)

I don't like too hiFi cable. I use George L's once in a while but they are too nice.

I have an old one that has a pronounced mid-tone that I use all the time..

Tune yer cable or leave the kitchen I always say..

BTW I always give the nice HIFI cables to the "other" guitar players and take my old mid-sounding cable and ALWAYS cut through the mix while they sound so HIFI and Thin my mid-tone cable sounds FAT and COOL. They tweek their amps for hours trying to cop my tone..it's all in the cable boys!!

You know,we so appreciate and long for the tones of the '60s/'70s,and these players often just used a run-of-the-mill coiled cord like everyone else.

The point of diminishing returns in a guitar cable is reached at about $25. Most of my cables are store brand with a replacement guarantee.

My favorite cable is a mid 80's heavy-duty curly cord. The ends have given out twice and have been replaced both times with Switchcraft. Great for plugging into a pedal, nothing to wrap around your feet.

No one has, as of yet, complained about my sound.

    I'm ok with it too.

I have a pair of Zaolla cables ($100 a pop and silver). Without question, there is an audible difference that is very apparent. That said, they are too efficient adding too much brightness to my ears. I tend to run George L's, but I can see that kind of approach in a study. Particularily if you record direct.
If running an amp, I by far prefer the George L's which I've used for 5 years now. Anyway, that's how I see it.
