    New piece of recording gear

Well it's new to me. I think it's about a 1948 Silvertone Wire Recorder. In the days before recording enthusiasts stored their mistakes on rusty pieces of plastic, they used a piece of wire. The fidelity is in the 200hz to 5khz range but it's an interesting study in portable recording history. It also has a turntable that plays 78 RPM records and quarter inch inputs for mics or radios. I haven't opened it up yet but I bet it has some cool tubes in it. Heavy xfmrs and motor too. It weighs a ton.

    Cool antique.

Way cool! I love old electronics.

I first learned about wire recorders from this guy:
    Several guitars in different colors
    Things to make them fuzzy
    Things to make them louder
    orange picks

It has to sound fantastic, since it's SO analog.

Yep I'm going to take it out to the delta and record some field hollers.

Actually I'm thinking about using it for an effect for recording like an old Robert Johnson sound and then mixing it in with the other tracks and play around with it in the digital domain.

You should make the transfers as quickly as possible. One of the reasons wire recorders were around for such a short period of time was that the print-through was horrible, since you were magnetizing the whole wire, and not some oxide coating on a backing.

Yeah I was kind of thinking of making it work as quickly as possible because of that. Maybe even see if I could hook it up with a loop a bit like an Echoplex.

You'd never get that onboard a commersial flight.

Does it use oxygen free wire?

My research has led to this site It has a lot of info on the type of wire and how to use the recorder.
