It's all about public service, really.

More importantly, I did hear the Banned of Nipsy's needed a lighting gaffer...

Funny, I played one at GC recently and fell in love. My wife didn't like the orange, bah, she just doesn't get it. You should be proud Kap'n, but you don't need any of us to tell you that.

Super Champ.......................dude.................. .... send me your Setzer model, maybe it will play better in capable hands.

Played it all night at practice. Sweet, sweet, articulate sounds. Jazzy, and aggressive tones all in the same axe. I've never been a humbucker guy, but I could change.

Of course, we had to play Won't Get Fooled Again, seeing as I've got the 6120/Bandmaster setup now.

I've been playing for twenty-five [!] years now, and never had the chance to own something even close to this. I knew there was a reason I stuck with it.

Gretsch Alnicos. I tried several with both. Some of the Gretsch ones sounded a little less dynamic than the TV Jones, in particular the ones on the Orange Duo Jet at GC [one that NeoFauve played as well], but there was surprisingly very little difference to my ears between a good Gretsch and the TV Jones.

PS: I'm so pleased that you're digging the instrument, Kap'n. I bet it sounds awesome! Just don't channel Pete Townsend to closely :)! We don't want any "accidents" now, do we? :).

Pete is really rough on instruments. He doesn't use his 6120 on stage, but even still he's busted it up a few times.

We were looking at a green Anniversary model he just picked up, and I noticed the box full of ceramic Filtertrons. He said, "You want some of these?" I asked "how do they sound?". His reply: "Like something I stepped in.":hee

These authentic Gretsch Filtertrons were once in Elliot Easton's guitar,
but they just didn't cut it.

Okay, I'll admit it. I haven't a friggin' clue what all those switches and knobs do on that thing. Still quite a knockout guitar.

Took me a while to figure it out, too. Let's see, the toggles are pickup select and tone high/mid/low, the knobs in the usual spot are individual pickup volumes, and the knob on the bottom cutaway is a master. Is that right?

The one I played was a Setzer model, don't know if he had a custom arrangement or not.

I didn't find the tone switch on my '67 Tennessean very useful. I found myself never using the switch and just left it in the middle position. I didn't have the ability to roll the tone off a little it's either the standard tone or 2 other standard tones. I hope these new ones have different caps.

Yes the knob on the lower bout is a master volume.

Well better late than never. Kap'n, what a sweet guitar. Love all that purdy maple and the wonderful contrast of the white binding. Bet she's a real player as well. Enjoy Kap!

    Close.

When you're wearing the guitar, the switch on the left is the pickup selector, and the switch on the right is tone. It's arranged so that the center position of the tone switch is esquire-like, no tone control in the circuit. Up is sort of like a tone control on 5, and down is sort of like a tone control on 1. Actually, they're both like having tone controls on 1, but with different capacitors. Up rounds off clean rhythm and fattens leads, down I haven't found much use for yet.

On a Setzer, those switches are, er, switched left to right.

The knob on the cutaway is the master volume. AFAIK, it's the only one anybody uses, since the others are so far away.

The knobs down by the jack are individual volume controls.

On a vintage Gretsch, there would be another switch by those knobs, a "standby" switch. Center is on, and either side is off, IIRC. Why? Beats me.

Gigged it last Saturday, and it was just awesome. Big fat sounds, controlled feedback. Some drunk chick almost fell on me while I was wearing it.

I felt the same way about my Tennessean. Part of that might have been the hi-lo trons, not enough low mids and lows to withstand the tone switch. This one works better, but I still need to tweak.

I'd have to guess that George's solo on "Michelle" might be a recorded example of someone using the "down" position.
Probably on his Tennessean at that point. (?)

It's just a guess, but, aside from that song, I can't think of anything.

I don't even think Chet, the actual Tennessean Country Gent, used that sound.

It'd be kind of a hokey, muffled jazzy sound. As if playing velour strings, wearing mittens is a good jazzy sound.

I've got a Chet Atkins album (of Christmas songs) that shows him playing a D'Angelico with some sort of vibrato tailpiece.

Chet played D'Angelicos until he signed his endorsement deal with Gretsch in '55 or so. Chet took his endorsement deals pretty seriously, and thought that playing instruments that weren't the ones with his name on them was not being honest to fans/customers. He later switched to Gibson, after Baldwin ran Gretsch into the ground.

There's a pretty good thread on this right now on the Gretsch Pages.

Kap'n- Speaking of the Gretsch Pages.
Maybe you've heard it, but a guy from Brazil, Joăo Erbetta, posted some MP3s of his recent band project, Guitar Bizarre. I think at least one was live.

He does these great surfy twang-noir arrangements of "Besame Mucho" and Radiohead's "Airbag."
I think(?) the particular thread started out being about his new Caddy Green Country Club , which he uses on the two songs.
He has a real nice way with a wammy bar and nice big pulsing twang.
    :yay Good, good stuff.
