    Re: Guitar books?

i would check out www.homespuntapes.com or the www.fendersplayersclub.com. They have a lot of diff materials and always have new products coming out. Homespun has a lot of acoustic guitar material but not as much in electric. They rate each product by skill level too which is helpful. You can even learn cajun fiddle ! Get on their mailing list and you get a pretty detail descriptive catalog.

Most of the instructional books i have purchased were quickly dropped. I just get all my scales & theory stuff off the web free. Lot's of guitar web sites have printable free leesons too, i am sure you know. Most of the Homespun materials come with a CD or DVD. I am trying out "Basic Licks for Elec Blues Guitar" by Jim Weider on DVD and has a small pamplet. I got this dvd to better SEE & HEAR how it's suppose to sound. VEry different than just lookin at a book.

"The Guitar Handbook" by Ralph Denyer.

Everything from chords, theory, picking, scales, reading, etc., to how a guitar is wired, how a tube works, the great guitar player's bio's, history of the guitar---this is a must own for every guitar player. About $25. Get it.

    Re: Guitar books?

That "Guitar Handbook" is a great reference. My Dad got it for me when I first started playing guitar, and it really helped me get acquainted with the instrument.

I am currently using "Blues You Can Use" by John Ganapes. I think it's an excellent lesson book for blues and "associated" music styles like rock, R&B, and even jazz. By the end of the book it's getting you into some pretty sophisticated chord substitutions, etc. There's a sequel "More Blues You Can Use" that looks very good too (but I haven't really started working from it yet).

For music theory, I've heard a lot of recommendations for "Edly's Music Theory for Practical People" by Ed Roseman, but I haven't read it yet.

If you're open to or interested in DVDs, I got a lot of useful info out the Hal Leonard Signature Licks videos on T-Bone Walker, Freddie King, and Muddy Waters.

Yes, I've checked out his soundclick site. I like his style of play that's why I said I would be interested in taking some lessons from him. I only live about 1,000 miles away though.

    Re: Guitar books?

    Besides whats been already said.

Ted Greene-Modern Chord Progressions is an eye opener.
Chord Chemistry is his first book.
Also, his Jazz Guitar Single Note Soloing Volumes 1 and 2.

The Frank Gambale Technique Book, 1 and 2.

    Robert Brown-Chord Connections.

Guitar Mode Encyclopedia from the National Guitar workshop by Jody Fisher.

Don Mock-Harmonic Minor Revealed and Melodic Minor Revealed.

The Ultimate Guitar Scale Bible by Mark Dziuba.

If you want to start with just two (that I feel would be most helpful) get Modern Chord Progressions (for voicings of chords and different progressions) and the Frank Gambale Technique Book 1(Modes, Pentatonics
Arpeggios [and a lot more!] and ideas on how to use them).

    Good Luck

JAM-Thanks for posting the link on the Ted Greene books.

tomass15-The best I can do is to provide you with the ISBN numbers and/or the publishing company. They might have a website but I don't know as I purchased them from a store I used to visit.
    And,
These books do not have a website address listed (in them) that I could direct you to. Sorry about that, Dang It!
But here are the ISBN numbers.

    Melodic Minor Revealed ISBN 0-7692-1556-4
    Harmonic Minor Revealed ISBN 0-7692-0029-X

Chord Connections and Guitar Mode Encyclopedia are from Alfred Publishing Co.,Inc. No ISBN #'s that I see. I'll check for a website on that one.

    U. G. Scale Bible ISBN 1-929395-09-4.

Anyway, I'll let you know what I find.
    :)

    Re: Guitar books?

After reading the posts with some of the suggestions decided I could use something new. Today my order from Amazon arrived:

The Art of Two-Line Improvisation by Jimmy Wyble (fingerstyle guitar)
Modern Chord progressions by Ted Greene
Jazz Guitar single note soloing by Ted Greene

You do have the "Fretboard Logic" books, doncha? More for the beginner, but wonderful reference and guides that fill-in those holes we should have plugged long ago.

    Hi Bob 335 and RedRain.

How come I don' know them?

Thanks for the directions and thoughts.

p.s. fezz: I think we should think of you as Dan'l Boone, 'cause not only do you find cooooooooool things, but you then shine a light and blaze a trail of unmissable arrows pointing towards them. I've learned a ton, thanks to you.
