Use pick and fingers claw style.

A D & E

Use your open G and your G note on the 5th fret for the signature lick that walks (G, Gb,A) on the D string.

Stretch your G note on the 3rd fret of the 6th string leading into the A chord.

The odd harmony jangle thing that most folk miss is at the end of the measures (and 4 and) while playing an open "A" chord at the nut, you'll use you index finger for the "A" chord on the second fret then lift that finger and use your third finger to fret "Gb" on the 4th string and alternate that with the open "G" string.

What's your point? You make a mistake, then compound it, revealing a deeper level of ignorance. Notes are not what anyone chooses to "call" them. This is the "context" of your remarks. It would make sense to not post incorrect information on the "theory" board, no? [For the record, the note that is "modified", is G, from G#] Frank Thomson, it's hard to tell which one you're laughing at from "context" alone, but you're an laid back guy, so I'll give you benefit of the doubt, or a free pass, whichever is warranted.[By the by, there is another inside joke in "quotes" above, if anyone can guess]

While that may be true, there is a reason why they are not truly interchangeable terms. it only works out ok in the Western tuning system, which is called equal temperament. in other tuning such as Meantone, "Ditonic semitones are larger than chromatic semitones (117 and 75 cents in ¼ comma meantone), therefore enharmonic equivalents do not exist. You must tune either a G# OR an Ab, for example, requiring re-tuning between pieces."

And while I know there are allot of you that will say "who cares? we all play in equal tuning now days", I just want to remind you that the european system of music is very old and that it could almost be considered a language based on habits and traditions. Things don't always have to be logical, but often there is a reason things used to be done the way they are now. Just look at english, there are lots of things we say that seem quite strange for some one learning the language, but still they (hopefully) fit in by using all the quarks of our grammar and wording. Just so there is proper grammar in music that isn't always logical, for example in 3/4 timing one is allowed to use a whole rest but not a whole note. I apologize for the music theory rant but i couldn't help myself. Did anyone find this interesting or educational? Now break out with the power chords and rock!

And yes the main thing that matters is that BlueFrogs can play Lay Down Sally.

Sorry dude, but my guitar doesn't have separate frets for F# and Gb. I don't think EC's did either.

Notes in melody lines can be notated in the direction of motion because music is linear. Sharp Going up, and flat going down. Sort of a musical "slang" if you will (Apparently, our friend won't).

Furthermore, the note in question a flourish or trill for the "G" note and as such, can qualify as a modification of a "G" note.

In a dictionary, this usage would be listed after the "correct" or "preferred" usage as being "acceptable" or to coin the term from Webster's or the OED "vulgar".

Dude I play guitar too ya know. I used to play cello and I am learning piano. I think i know how stringed instruments work well enough.

No really the only instruments this is practical with is fret-less and 1 note per key instruments. I was simply explaining the origins of why a# and gb are not really the same. the other reason of course is so that one does not have a scale that goes A-B-Db-D-Fb-Gb-Ab. where the heck did C and E go? If you do it wrong like this you lose some organization.

The other thing is that as far as i know it is impossible to have a perfect temperament. Bach was pretty dam close and his as far as i know is still the best. Here is the thing, before bach, people tuned harpsichords in Pure Tuning and it sounds perfect in about six or seven keys, By this i mean no beating (fluctuations) what so ever. The other keys sound like the harpsichord was dropped from the stage and retuned by a monkey during monsoon season.

The trick then is to try and even out and hide bad spots and not put the good all in one place and the bad in the other.
