Next project on deck (lots of phtots):

My not-so-Burgundy Mist '60s RI Strat. One of the later ones (around 2000) w/an alder body. This project is going to be documented a little better than my previous ones. I'm going to try to keep a step by step record of all the mods I do to this guitar.
As you can see, I'm stripping off the poly. This is after about nine hours of Jasco Paint & Epoxy Remover sitting on it. There's a long way to go still. When this is done I will re-radius the body more to vintage specs, probably finesse the contours a little, prime it w/BIN shellac & then shoot it w/lacquer. This one WILL DEFINITELY BE Shell Pink.
    Or Peacock Blue.
Another USACG neck will go on it, & all new electronics. The color coats will be acrylic & the clear will be nitro. I'm going to do my best not to have to relic this one, at least not too much anyhow.

    Still stripping the sanding sealer:

The cavities are coming out pretty clean

    detail:

You should see the surface of this thing. I would swear they took it right from a thickness sander to a router & then off to the spray booth. Both sides are covered diagonally w/about 150 grit sanding marks.

It is a pretty nice 3-piece body, but you can see some small knots (very dark "dots") & I'm sure that is why it became a solid color. I dig the "flock of seagulls" grain on the front cutaway!
    Shell Pink it is!

    Or Ocean Turquoise Metallic...

Here's why these guitars are so inexpensive & why they spray them w/a THICK poly finish: Lots of labor saved by little or no hand-sanding:

Maybe my estimate of 150 grit was off. Some parts look like 80 grit!

I could never get away w/this using lacquer, particularly spraying thin coats:

Here are some cross hatch sanding marks on the fore-arm contour:

That's a nice grainy piece of wood. Almost a shame to cover it up. Pink is cool though. It takes a real man to go there with a play a pink guitar!

I hate to agree with T-B, but the man has a point. Who knew the wood was so nice under all that plastic, with not too shabbily matched grain no less.

I've got it- I'll try my hand at a 3-Tone 'burst & if it doesn't work I will cover it w/a solid color. I've seen some Custom Shop guitars like that!

you know what would look really cool is make a see-through pink finish--kinda like a vintage blonde with a pink hue - that way you have the pink and can utilize that awesome woodgrain--just my 2cents !

That's a GREAT idea. But it would be better suited for an ash body. As cool as this one looks, a few coats of dilute white & it'll be covered up.

Re: Next project on deck (lots of phtots):

I had my last project finished in BMM, but it's a little bright. Is Fender tinting the clear coat on their MIM Classics to give them a patina?

My source on paint codes and such at the time said that adding yellow tint to the clear on the BMM wouldn't really be worth it. Since completing mine I've wondered about that.

Anybody remember any original BMM finishes from back in the day, and how they compare to the reissues? Could part of my problem be perception, due to the fact that I'm using a stark white guard instead of parchment or mint green?

Re: Next project on deck (lots of phtots):

The original Burgundy Mist guitars I've seen looked a bit "browner" than today's reissues. That could be due to aging, I don't know.
BTW- I just bought one of these for a body I'm doing in Shell Pink this Spring:

*edited to add a phtot of the primered body*

LOL! Years back there was a local comedy show on TV up here & one of the skits they did was about all the activities people enjoyed (jogging, bike riding, swimming, water skiing, sunbathing) on the one afternoon the sun shone here in the NW. That's a pretty busy day.
RE: a good finish- Here's a thread w/that information I posted some time ago:
    HERE
Because I'm not doing this on a "production" schedule I can afford to let my guitars cure longer than most (lol, I've got bodies that have been waiting more than a year for the final rub-out!) Because of this I thin my lacquer a little more than most guys would at 4:1 or more even!
Also I would recommensd buying an expensive reducer (thinner) from an auto paint supplier instead of the Klean-Strip lacquer thinner you find at Wal Mart. Use that crap to clean your gun.

Re: Next project on deck (lots of phtots):

T-Birds are pink & they're cool. Floyd is pink & he's cool. So I deduce that Strats can be pink & cool, too. But probably not w/the shell guard. Looking at it now I think the shell matches the Teal Green Metallic body & the Shell Pink looks better w/a white pearloid guard.
