    Re: Daddy Likes!

Hey OA, you mentioned a hankering for odd guitars, in psycho-surf-a-billy vein, or some such.
Well take a look at this. Click and scroll down to the 4th item.

    http://catalog.muzicstore.com/guitars.htm

Very Link! If you know what I mean.
Kicked myself for not grabbing it when the grabbing was good..

I've played one, and they're pretty damn cool. Yamaha quality too. It only looks like a wobbly old 60's import.

The story can wait for next week, though. More details then ;)

    Re: Daddy Likes!

Funny about the Vox copy... I was in a guitar repair shop the other day and a guy was having a replacement pickguard made for a real one of these. The original pickguard was very badly shrunk over time... I don't think they used high quality material.

The new replacement one turned out very nicely. I would have liked to have seen it on the guitar.

I agree with the Kap'n; all those guitars are _way_ uglier than the Vox, which has it's own authentic vibe, I think.

But then again you are a self-confessed puppy-kicking/kitten torturing/republican voting conservative kinda guy, right Curtis? ;)

In this case I did not actually mean "ugly" as an insult. That guitar is so freaking hideous it's actually very cool. I'd definitely play that one before any of the guitars that Kap'n posted.

In addition to all my fine puppy-kicking qualities, I am the builder of the Uglocaster - a guitar covered with feathers with a rubber chicken strap and a Darth Vader volume knob. I should think my ugly guitar credentials are fairly solid.

I just purchased this one from DiPinto. It doesn't have a wild shape, but it still looks unique, IMO (I liked the chambered mahogany body with mini hb's and the Bigsby)..It should be here in a couple days..I'll post a complete review!

Bizarre, I just mentioned Hallmark in another thread. I had no idea they were making them again. Rick Miller from SCOTS has a link to Eastwood on his site. I've not seen or heard of him playing them live though.

I'll have to check the settings on my Vast Right Wing Conspiracy decoder ring. Last I noticed, puppy kicking and kitten torturing were de rigeur (pardon the French)

Yeah, I played the Uglocaster for only one gig. It was heavy, difficult to play, and it smelt of rubber chicken! It's hard to play when your guitar smells like that. Plus, the miniature transformer that powered the EL lights (did I forget to mention those?) all over the thing caused a terrible buzzing in the pickups.

    Re: Daddy Likes!

I dig the look of that DiPinto, cooltone.

I was in horse trading mood a while back and chatted with the owner of www.myrareguitars.com about swapping a couple of my 60's Euro-bizzaro guitars for some of his newer, retro-bizzaro Eastwood guitars but we were a couple hundred bucks off from where I wanted to be, so I didn't do the deal. He told me to check back during a busier part of the season (this was in the guitar selling doldrums of late spring-early summer), but I let my trade bait go in other deals.

I'll still probably try something from their line in the future...I just can't say no to weird guitars.

Hallmark is basically, the child of Mosrite. They are to Mosrite what Heriage is to Gibson.

    Re: Daddy Likes!

I met Semie Mosely at the first guitar show I ever attended and talked to him for a few minutes. Being the ignorant young man that I was at the time, I had no idea who he was. I just thought his guitars looked cool, and that he was a really nice guy to take time to talk to some punk kid about them.

I've seen his widow at a couple of other shows since his passing, too. She was also very nice.

After realizing who Mr. Mosely was, and hearing the legend of how he came up with the Mosrite shape (flipped a Strat, then redrew the lines a bit) I did the same with the first guitar (actually a bass) that I attempted to build. I flipped over my Jazz bass, traced it, then futzed with the horns a bit. It doesn't look too much like a Mosrite, but that wasn't what I was going for. It looked more like the mutant offspring of a Fender, Mosrite, and Thunderbird, and was pretty much exactly what I was shooting for. Too bad my luthier skills weren't up to par at the time. Some day I'm going to do that project over, and do it right.

OSA, you can just build your own Phantom. The body routing is the hardest part. Lets see what Warmoth has to offer. hmmmmmmmm.

    Here's your body blank.

    Re: Daddy Likes!

Jack at Phantom Guitar Works has a green body ready for assembly. He said he could have it assembled and shipped in 3 to 5 days. Not bad. He says it's not Sea Foam Green, but what they call Refrigerator Green, sounds like it's the old Avacodo used on appliances when I was a kid. I really want Martian Green, so I'm going to ask if he can custom paint one. Consideriing the artists that are using his stuff, up to and including Will Ray, and the reviews I've read, I just may pop for one.

Played one today. Very nice, but it may be the heaviest guitar I've ever held. No way I could hack that all night.
