hmmmmmmmm, a quick search has these little beauties selling in the $400 to $500 range. Perhaps a nice "turnover" piece.

I remember these! From the Fender Jan 1982 Catalogue I can tell you the following:
Slim, compact style double cutaway bodies, upper bout slightly longer than the lower, pickguard slightly flatter & longer than a strat's.... They do look sort of OK, but the Lead 1 looks the weirdest of the three with it's lonely looking bridge "dual coil" pickup (series humbucker, parallel humbucker or 2 different single coils). 25.5" scale length, maple or rosewood boards, 1.650" width at nut.
Colours? Sienna Sunburst, Cherry Sunburst, Black or White....
The Lead series appeared first in around 1979 and were designed as "low end" instruments, and they listed at around $400 US (hardly cheap)

Is a Lead I cheesy? Sure is, but a Lead II is not :lol
I had one and liked it a lot.It was very solidly built. Had a nice beefy maple neck. I used the neck on a strat for a while. I put it back together then stuck a Zebra '59 SD in the bridge and set it up for slide.
I think its cool piece. If it plays/sounds good go for it.

My first 'real' name guitar was a Lead II. I loved that thing. The neck was much like a typical late '70's strat neck. Mine was transparent wine red with a maple neck. The headstock and body had smaller dimensions. Do you remember the Steve Morse ad's from back then? (He was an endorsee)

My friend has a untouched LEAD 3. Thats he bought this summer. It had been sitting in the guys shop for 20 years. They guy went out of buisness and he bought it for 700cnd with the case.
I think it's an Amazing guitar I love it. I love the humbuckers And if I remember right it has a out of phase switch
The woods nice, and it's made in the USA. I think maybe they where a lil ahead of there time ? And im not sure what kind of humbuckers are on there. but if you can live with the one bridge pick up gofor it! But id maybe keep an eye out for a 3

Ha! I bought a Gibson L6S because of Steve Morse back in his Kansas days. Back when I used to think that if I played the same exact gear as my guitar heros, that I might actually sound like them! LOL!
Anyway, this Lead I might be fun. We'll see. When I play with the classic rock bands, I seldom use the neck p'up so, away we go!

I bought it!
This little guitar kicks ass! It actually sounds very good and the neck plays great. I have to clean it up a little and put new strings on it, but it's a little sweetie for sure. It even came with the original hardshell case which is in very good condition.
I'll post some phtots later. I just might bring this along to the NY Jam. ha!

there was one in a local shop a couple years ago, i never got around to playing it though cause the shop owners drove me nuts. i could only handle buying strings, and even that was a 20 minute ordeal..."no i'm not interested in a rotovibe, really...yes that is all... what?... no i don't need a capo..."
