    &%$#& reporters!!!

I spoke to a reporter last week about one of our school boards and the reporter twisted everything I said to make the board look bad - even though I was careful not to say anything negative about them. The chair called me to tell me about it and was a bit perturbed...

I should be used to it by now (after 22 years of dealing with reporters) but it still pisses me off when they do that!

Next time or every time, use your own recorder and show it to the reporter. That way you CYA! If he uses things out of context, you can then supply your own recording of the facts to both your superiors, and another station.
    They're REAL anyway.....

It no secret that I have a total distrust for the media. The same thing happened to me once in New Haven when I was selling bikes and ATVs. TYhe reporter twited the story into a child killing, ATV bashing story and tried to hold the dealers responsible. It was whacked.

    Re: &%$#& reporters!!!

I concur - I once received a yearly merit award for my industry and a reporter from the largest DC newspaper interviewed me...luckily I made it a stipulation that I reviewed the article prior to publish. He had twisted my comments on the project I was completing and made it a social commentary on the impact of my building project on the traffic and "quality of life" in the area of the city I was working in, and he used my award and professional status as if it were a "credible" witness information.

I don't even talk to them anymore.

You mean I cannot trust what I'm reading in the papers?
Maybe that's why I don't read the papers anymore!

It's too bad all reporters can't just be fair and balanced.

    Re: &%$#& reporters!!!

When I write an article for the magazines, I write as straight forward and fairly as I possibly can. If editorial doesn't like it, I stand my ground. If they push the issue further, I tell them to have someone else write it. I have a decent reputation in the industry for saying it straight and even though I don't do a whole lot of writing, I want it to be as true and factual as it can be.

    Re: &%$#& reporters!!!

I find more reporters suffer from a lack of experience, rather than a lack of ethics. The "education beat" is usually given to the newby on the paper - underpaid and no idea what they're doing. They are also at the mercy of the editors, who may have an axe to grind. I remember a really good reporter covering our town wrote it as she saw it - on a matter involving our school board. We were right, but not in the party in power, so she wrote an article that stated the facts. Not only did her editor rewrite the article to put a slant on it, but the reporter was "transfered".

Unfortunately, more publishers are attempting to use their papers (or radio stations, etc) to support their own agendas- a very disturbing trend.

people can't handle the real.. dry...truth... that is why we have the media. I think they go to the school of negativity instead of the school of journalism. Motivate with Fear, The sky is always falling, Somebody is always Watching YOU, Everything you eat is going to kill you and your family can sue XYZ company.... etc.
