    Finally stripped the paint off.

Must admit,I'm quite pleased with the result. Even managed to leave the clear poly coating intact, and just removed the paint with a heat gun.

    90 minutes? :bug

    Great job.

Looks like some nice wood underneath. Congrats. I'm always afraid of what's under a solid color. then again, the red did look pretty sharp, too.

Yep,but as I said, the poly is still on. The red just fell off,and then all I needed to do was rub the base coat silver off with some carb cleaner(really quick to do).
Might remove the poly at a later date, then again,I might not either ;)

Teles: one of the few guitars, IMO, that look great as just "wood".

So, (snicker snicker), what uh, (chortle chortle), effect has this modification, (nyuk nyuk nyuk) had on the tone, (heh heh heh), of this guitar?

Re: Finally stripped the paint off.

    Oh it's GOOD!.

It's opened up a completely new sound. More treble, more middle, more bass response. More women dropping at my feet, free beer, admission to all the best clubs, hairier chest, gained 2 inches in height, and don't need to blackface the SF pro reverb either.
All this comes at a price though. It turns out I had to use a Power-Devil heat gun,and not a Black & Decker,as the B&D just robs any tone useless. Also,3 of the neck mounting screws need a higher torque setting, while the 4th one is left out to create a hollow sound chamber.

I find the pre-Sears Power-Devil delivers a "woodier" blast of heat than the modern ones.

    A heat gun?
    Good idea.
'Cause I've noticed that when you sand the finish off, it seems the vibrations will actually shorten the resonant life of the body. While you're sanding the body gets humming, but, alas, there's no music coming out of it.
    It's so sad.

Re: Finally stripped the paint off.

Great job! You chose well leaving that poly alone. I've been chipping, stripping and sanding away at mine on and off for weeks. Barnacles have nothing on Fender's poly when it comes to staying put.

The wood on mine (four sections like yours) are equally well matched but it was a burst to begin with. Once I get the poly off I think the final contenders for color are: Trans blue, sea foam green, solid pink or pelham blue.

Yesterday wasn't a good day for the project. I'm down to bare wood on the front and the stripper I sprayed on the back ran down and leeched into the front. Wonder how deep I'll have to sand to get clean wood. I may end up with a really thin Tele or just an '84 neck for sale before it's all over.

    Looks great! :)

Quick newbie question - if using a heat gun is okay, why do people sandpaper finishes off? Is it just the finish and not the paint that they're trying to remove? Do certain woods respond badly to the extreme heat change?

Re: Finally stripped the paint off.

Depends on the paint already on at the time.

Cellulose usually rubs off fairly easily, but this poly stuff is bloody awful.

In my case,a red top coat over a met silver base coat, and under there a reasonably thick coat of clear poly, much like powder coating.
The problem with it is,when it starts to chip,it'll look crap, and IMO far worse than beaten up plain wood.
    Looks OK for now though.

Re: Finally stripped the paint off.

I tried a heat gun this morning and it works very well. I really had to get things HOT and using a metal scraper (2" wide spackling spreader) I was able to get straight down to the wood as the finish came off. MUCH better than sanding and chemical strippers. The finish, inclucing poly, is about 1mm thick.

Thanks for the tip Johnny64 and again, great looking Tele!

I have a bit of a hard time beliving changing the paint changes the sound on a solid body guitar. But then again im not there and i don't play the thing.

Re: Finally stripped the paint off.

Well i can see how the type of wood or the grain. or the thickness etc changes the tone. But paint ? it's not a acoustic where the wood needs to vibrate more to produce sound. It's a solid block of wood that happens to have pic ups on it. so I don't see how a lack of paint, more paint. stained etc. Gonna change the tone. Maybe you changed somthing when you reset it up ? fix some faulty wiring. differn't pick up height ?

Er , I was joking C80. I thought at least the 'hairier chest' and 'free beer' gave it away :)

Nice work! Probably a good idea to leave that poly alone. Serves as a good sealer and base from which to build the new finish IMO. Very nice looking guitars!!
