Removing control knobs from a strat

Sorry for the newbie type question....but is there a recommended way of removing the control knobs on a stratocaster? I am replacing the pots and I don't want to damage the plastic. I tried using a cloth over the knob with pliers, but it still seemed to be damaging the knob. Any help is appreciated. Thanks

use a shoestring or polishing cloth, etc, looped around the shaft below the knob
to lift the knob off without damage to the knob or pickguard.
If you leave the house, you're just asking for it.

Use two spoons, one on either side of the knob and gently pry the knob off.

2nd on the spoons. A little "kinder and gentler..."

You can wedge the tail of a T shirt under the whole knob all the way around then just lift up. That way no metal is involved and it never causes damage.
