    I bought a Performer

    an 85 in Sunburst.

What the hell was Fender thinking??
I've never seen anyone actually PLAY one, so I'll be even more "unique".

It was the 80's. They have an excuse. What the hell were YOU thinking?:lol

IIRC, they've got a strange shape, the "Elite" whammy, and polepiece-less pickups. How do they sound?

    Re: I bought a Performer

First time I saw one of those was when Mike Kineally whipped one out at a gig in the 80's.
I think he was sponsored by fender.

Oh, wait... that was the only time I saw one.

Is that the one that looks like a hybrid of a Strat and a Warlock? Yeah, if I saw one it'll be hard for me to resist too!

    Re: I bought a Performer

What do the electronics on that thing do?

I see a 3 way switch (Possibly 5 way???) which seems fairly obvious. But there's also a small switch below the tone control. What's that all about?

Weird pickups. How do they sound?

    That's BOSS!

The body shape is pretty cool, but I'm not drawn to that type of hardware.
    Maybe it needs a Bigsby.

    Coil Tap switch.
Honestly, I haven't plugged it in yet.
balances nicely, has a very flat board. Good shredding!

    Maybe later.

Man that thing would look so good in Fiesta Red with that rosewood board (checking Wilco's nicely inserted photo)...man I really like the headstock - it is simple and effective...can you say Jetsons!

    Re: I bought a Performer

I sold my '85 sunburst Performer Bass to buy my Jazz Bass. Tiniest, skinniest neck was a dream for an ex-guitarist to play. The pup had been wired wrong, so added a switch to correct (& uncorrect) the problem.

After more than 15 years of faultless (at least on the instrument's part) gigging with it, the neck wouldn't hold straight for more than a month or so... not matter how I adjusted it, it went another way quickly.

It was Fender Japan's idea to create a nice quality line of guitars & basses separate from American-made Fenders. The Performer was the first one to be marketed.

    Re: I bought a Performer

OSA, if IPL brings it to the NYC Jam, you can get a tracing of it there.

Or, if you look on the Mr Gearhead site, you should be able to find a life-sized PDF file diagram of the guitar.

Hmmm. I'd like a tele bridge and pup with a Bigsby and a TV Jones Filtertron in the neck. Schwing!
