How important are the quality of caps when you re-cap your old amp

I just picked up a '68DR in pretty good condition. Turns out it did have a cap job, but apparently it was done with cheap Japanese capacitors.
Would I have to be Eric Johnsen to hear the difference, or is it no big deal.
    Thanks,
    Joel

Most modern caps won't give you a reliability problem, so you don't have to worry about it self-destructing. Most techs and boutique amp-builders use Sprague TVA Atoms. I've never used anything else, but others say the Spragues make the amp a little more dynamic and open sounding. Sprague was bought out by Vishay, so how long these caps will be around is a good question.

What you might want to do is play it for a while and see how it sounds. You may be sending it off to a tech sooner or later anyway. If you do you can have him recap it with good caps. You'll already be paying his bench charge, so this shouldn't be too expensive to have done with the 'good' stuff.
