Buying Strat replacement tuners
Any advice on replacement tuner for a '74 Strat? I've got a '74 with originals that will not stay in tune. I'd like to avoid drilling if possible but will if need be as it is a beater.
Thanks in advance.

The tuners on my '57 Strat are the originals and work fine.
Your tuning problems are probably related to the nut rather than the tuners.
The slots might be pinching the strings or be too deep.
Try lubricating the slot with soap or something.
If that doesn't help have the nut repaired or replaced.
Tremolo setup can cause tuning problems also.
You can probably do a search to find out how to do it right.
I would replace the tuners as a last resort.

Fender sells the F tuners brand new, still made by Schaller. I used them on a 77 Strat and they fit fine. They may not fit in the early F tuner ferrules though, I think the hole was smaller on those.

I hoped a new nut would help. Ijust had a new nut done as well as some setup work but no luck. The old tuners don't work smoothly so I'm sure I'll benefit from a replacement. I'll check into the new Fender F tuners.
Thanks

I've read that the original '70's Tuners was one of the things CBS cut corners on to keep costs down.I've owned 2x 70's strats and both went out of tune easily, especially with lots of blues bending.I replaced all of them with the new F tuners and the problem was solved.I've since sold those guitars and bought a '69 strat and changed those ones as well and I haven't had a problem.
Just remember to keep the originals in case you want to sell the guitar.

You need to try a graphtech nut. Gaurateed not to stick at nut. guitar will stay in tune much, much better. I have put graphtech nuts on every guitar I've had for the last 15 years. Better than any other nut including bone. And a great deal better than graphite
