One of the tuning-machines on my son's Strat is loose, like the gears aren't meshing properly. It still works, but I don't know for how long. Does anyone sell single tuning-machines or do I have to buy a whole set for a replacement? Thanks.

Keep your feet warm, your strings clean, and your powder dry.
Check local shops and repair guys. When I worked in guitar stores, we always kept mismatched sets and discards and would often sell off single tuners from them, or even salvage them for parts. What kind of tuner is it? It may be possible to open it up and replace the gear itself.

It's an old-style Fender machine—cut the string, push the end down into the hole, bend it in the slot and wrap it up—for the low E. Theres a screw hole in a flange on the bottom of the gear cover and the top is held in place by the same screw that holds the bottom of the 5th string machine in place.
I guess I'll start calling around and see if someone's got one. Thanks, Brad.

No problem. Let me know how it works out. If you don't find anything locally, and think you can take the old tuning key apart, I may be able to scrape up a gear for you. I'll have to check my parts stash.

Check Ebay.
I needed a tuner for a Les Paul and found a partial set from a guy who had broken one and replaced his.
I got a very good deal and still have a few left. Unfortunately, they won't fit your son's guitar.
There's a whole set of Ping tuners in the classified section here that Melody is selling as an auction to benefit TFF. I bet you get a real deal on the set!
If you're bored, you're not groovin'.
i got a free set for ya if needed.
