I never find the pickups "muddy". I have them back from the strings and adjusted well and they are great. Different, but not muddy.
I'm so glad they have these schallers as it would just be any other variation on a theme if it had "classic" humbuckers. My les paul does that fine, so I like the fact that this is different.

The new owner not only replaced the pickups but took out the TBX tone controls. When I had it I used to just barely turn the knob out of the detent (more toward 10) and that took away some of muddy tone. (on 10 it was too bright and a little harsh to my taste) The 335 that replaced just had a sound that I preferred. Also my Esprit wouldn't stay in tune worth a crap.

Ok, maybe a good hand from a servicetech would´ve helped there?

Yeah, I took it in. The tech recut the nut, that helped it play a lot better (it came from the factory cut way too high). I was spoiled from the 335 that I traded for it. That thing was a rock! Never had a guitar stay in tune that well. John Carruthers had set it up which accounts for a lot of that. As I mentioned in another post the fine tune tailpiece was warping, the fingers were gradually separating, maybe a dud tailpiece? I think the Robben Ford model has Gibson type bridge and tailpiece. Too bad because I really liked the neck and playability.

edit: I can see from the pics the Robben Ford does have a Gibson type T.O.M and stop tailpiece.

Yes, the Robben Ford does have those fittings, BUT he first started with the standard guitar, so I guess it wasn't that bad ;)
I also think the TBX is not so hot. I can find a position I like, but would rather it wasn't like that. However I still think the Pickups are good (not amazing, but good) and as you say, playability is brilliant.
A great 335 is an incredible guitar however and a hard act to follow!

Re: Fender Flame or Esprit? Anyone?

I've had 3 different Esprits over the past few years - all standards. The pickups were good but struck me as a bit generic - like many 80's Japanese guitars.

It seems that the USA typical price for a standard is in the $800 range, with black ones being the cheapest. That one for $999 seems a bit high. The higher line models can be a little more.

These guitars were made in 1984 only, so noone has to wonder about the year theirs was made. :)

I've never seen a Robben Ford model in person, but I understand they are a lot more expensive. But they have unique features and are made in USA vs Japan, so I guess that's to be expected.

Re: Fender Flame or Esprit? Anyone?

I think one thing about them is that they are aimed more at the 335 market but people expect a rock guitar. For me the neck pickup sounds wonderful. A great lead tone and a cool jazz type tone.
The Robben Ford is basically a custom shop model, so mega expensive. I'd rather have the MIJ one though. Much more original and different...

Re: Fender Flame or Esprit? Anyone?

A little anecdote regarding the Esprit I had. I traded it in at the store for a real nice 335 (the store was right here in Pomona). Several years later, I got an e-mail from a guy back east asking if I'd owned an Esprit, he got it from a guy in Arizona. I had some posts on Ampage with my real name and the guy recognized it from the warranty card that was still with the guitar. He sent me some pics of the pickup changes done to it.

Rick, there is a pic tutorial at the front desk area and in the test area. Short answer: You need to host the pic somewhere and link to it.

Also, your want-to-buy thread is enough. We don't allow discussions of buy/sell in other areas of the forum. Please review our rules. Thanks.

There's a nice Sunburst '86 Esprit up for grabs on ebay...!

Also...I have a Robben Ford Ultra SP, a 1994 model - Pre-US made. There some pics on the first page of this thread. Does anyone know what it might worth? I've had it for about 10 or 11 years now. It's in near mint condition. Someone is interested in buying it from me.

    Thanks,
    Rich

The one thing that gets me is the cutaways.

    They're half-way to Mosrite-land.
    Several guitars in different colors
    Things to make them fuzzy
    Things to make them louder
    orange picks

I wonder what a Fender flame Elite/ with case , in Candy burst red with a Krahler is worth..
I see the DR got $1994.00 USD for his.. Nice price>>

Just wondering if the Krahler ads to the price or take"th away. With fender installing these, i would hope it would be a postive option.

I don't think the Kahler would add anything (except the advantage? of a tremolo) nice guitar btw enjoy.

Remember mine was very near mint and sold in Europe.

wow the Frost white looks amazing.. The candy burst elite i have here, i would say is very close to mint.. You can move it around, in the light and you be hard pressed to find any marks..
The only other guitar i have that come close to the condition is a 1997 Rick, thats been in the case for 10 yrs.

The rectangular hardshell case the Frost white is in..Are they the original cases for these. These Cases, are not up to par with the guitar.. too bad Fender used these for such a great guitar.
I think the DR.s case would be more in line with the orignal or is it an upgraded case that was offered..

    Hi Rick
I am pretty sure it is the original case. Fender USA and a perfect fit. I think it's a pretty solid case to be honest
