7 string players, what's the deal?

So what advantages are there to playing a 7 string? I know you gain 5 extra notes, but other than that, why play one?

    There's two answers.

For Jazz folks like George VanEps, you can achieve different, deeper voicings than you can with a six string. This is especially handy for guitars in a solo setting.

For nu-metal folks, you can make a more demonic

We can thank the 7 string guitar for ushering in the latest crop of "Cookie Monster" vocals.

So the seventh string is a low B and not a high A?

    correct-a-mundo !!!

then they detune that until their strings are flopping around the fretboard, making nothing but undeciferable farting sounds. THEN they get someone on the mike who sounds like their blowing chunks out their a**hole, and they call it music.

never mind those of us who can actually play so you can understand the melody

    Not always. Sometimes it's a low A.

I remember reading about a guy who played 7-string classical. He used fishing line for a high A.

On a seven string if you do normal chords from a six string do you just forget about the seventh string?
