ok..Who make you want to own/play a strat?

might sound very familiar, but it's true,

Jimi Hendrix - he's why i find out who SRV was...then SRV really make me want to have that massive sweet TONE...

i'd be interested to see who inspire you besides these greats =-)

No two ways about it for me. Clapton's Brownie on the Derek and the Dominoes record. That was during my formative years so that is probably part of the reason why I prefer a maple Strat over a rosewood one. When I play a good original maple board Strat I feel like all is right with my world. :60burst

The first time I wanted to play a strat was when I saw Jimmy Page and his Lake Placid Blue strat.

Jimi Hendrix inspired me to play a Strat. That was 35 years ago and still no one has surpassed Jimi.

    "Cuz it's Beggar's Day!"

    Nils Lofgren (who?).

Yup, it's true. Oh sure, I noticed them long before I ran into Nils (Spring '75), but what he did with a Strat was head & shoulders above all his contemporaries.

This vote is derivative of Jimi, cuz Nils cites him as a major influence (who don't?). All rights reversed. Trademarks are property of...etc, etc.

Eric Clapton and Jimi Hendrix in approximately 1971. Didn`t get my first one until `73, a brand new natural body with maple neck, and I hated it!! It sounded more piercing than the records to me. After about 6-8 months, I got rid of it. I had about more 6 Strats, after that one, that I also ended up not keeping either, until `92 when I fell in love with the Custom Shop models and started keeping them.

    Hendrix and Clapton.

Clapton, especially after seeing him live in 1983 at age 17, and buying the Layla album right around the same time was probably the biggest influence, followed by Hendrix and Gilmour.

My first good guitar was a Strat and I bought it because Clapton played a Strat.

    Eddie Van Halen!!
Without a doubt he inspired me to grab a chunk of ash, and take it into the school shop class and make a strat using the neck off my Kramer. After that I was a major super strat junkie. I Built alot guitars by swapping necks modifying anything I could bolt a new neck on, route for a floyd Rose, and put humbuckers in!

Jimi Hendrix, Stevie Ray vaughan, and Jake E. Lee hit shortly after that. It seemed like all my early guitar heros played strats in some form or another.

Never one to pay attention to what others were listening to in highschool, it was Buddy Holly for me, then Jimi, Pete Townshend (early Who footage!) and currently Hank Marvin. Robin Trower was in that pantheon somewhere for a few years too, but I largely quit smoking that stuff.

    Little Wing played by SRV.

I had to hear it over 10 times. After that it was clear that I will own a Strat someday.

Eric Johnson, SRV, Larry Carlton(*), and most of all, Jimi.

    * In the early '90s I saw Larry play a KICK ASS show in which he played a thrashed Strat into a Dumble OD Special. The tone was amazing.

The "Chirping" Crickets, an album released on Brunswick right when "That'll Be The Day" was big, with a pic of the guys holding a Gibson (w/trap tail) and the burst Strat on the cover..........I wanted both guitars......but I was just a kid and liked the looks of 'em......

Hey, what can I say, I'm old.....

But I must admit, Hendrix was the force that made me wanna play.....guy was not from this planet..........gibs

    buzzy feiten!
yup...it's not that i was unaware of jimi hendrix,in fact i idolized him..but i resisted the strat thang cause i wanted my own voice. every young black cat who ever picked up a strat has been burdened by this comparison. but when i heard buzzy on stevie wonder's "superwoman" and "looking for another pure love"(which featured buzzy and jeff beck),i could'nt resist the call any longer.

    Jimi Hendrix!!

    David Gilmour!!

    Eric Clapton!!

    Buddy Guy!!

I saw footage of Hendrix playing Monterey at my grandma's house when I was wet-behind-the-ears......that got me into guitar in the first place.

"Buddy Guy & Junior Wells Play The Blues" was my first blues album.

Gilmour has always blown me away with his tasteful playing

    Clapton......what need I say :) :) :)

My uncle, playing his '63 strat is almost a religious experience for me. If you want famous names, I guess SRV. One of the first blues albums I got was Soul to Soul, a gift from my uncle. Nowadays I actually listen more to Gibson guys like Fleetwood Mac (although Jeremy Spencer had a strat), Paul Kossoff, Bluesbreakers Clapton etc.

I'll take a different tack. Scott Lentz made me want to own a Strat.

Sure, I've loved seeing and listening to Hendrix, Clapton, Townshend; et. al., but it was owning a Lentz Tele that made me want to own a Lentz Strat. A master builder at the top of his game...I couldn't resist.

    Right on, Dillon

    Dillon,

I am a bonafide Les Paul player. Scott Lentz was after me for some time about a custom Strat. I decided a year or so ago to put my money where my mouth is. I called Scott and ordered one custom 59 Strat-style and I sent him my 1952 goldtop Les Paul to convert to 59 specs for me. I got the Strat first and I really thought I would miss my Paul. I did miss it but the Strat more than made up for the loss. Best playing and sounding Strat I have ever played.

I would have to agree with you. I have always liked the sounds of a Strat but it was my Lentz custom that made me a Strat player. It just doesn't play like any other Strat. Lentz really creates some unique instruments. I have been offered twice what I paid for it but it is not for sale. I love my Lentz Strat.

    Peace out...

Leo Fender, cause he invented and then marketed them brilliantly. Before Leo there was no demand for strats.

Just trying to be different. I guess SRV's strat tones would be the root of my ownership.
