I wouldn't say Billy Joe is one of the best ever to play a strat, but he is the reason I play guitar.

    Another vote for Bolin

    Tommy Bolin!
Tommy was really an amazing Strat player.

From Zephyr to the James Gang to his solo work and collaborations with Billy Cobham, Alphonse Mouzon, Deep Purple, Jeff Beck and others. He was amazing. Too bad he bailed before his time...

Yes, Tommy did so many different styles so well - so convincingly. I believe he'd have gone down as one of the greatest had he lived even just a few years longer - but I give the nod to Hendrix as the best Strat player ever, for Machine Gun if nothing else...

Hey wasn't Tommy Bolin a LP player? Or did he at sometime play a LP?

Yes, Tommy played a Les Paul on some of his stuff, but he tended more towards the Strat. Hendrix played that Gibson V alot but he's known, and justifiably so, as a Strat player first and foremost. I believe Tommy's preference, based on my listening experience, was the Strat although he wasn't averse to picking up other brands from time to time....

I've heard good things about him I guess I'll have to check some of his material out.

    Robert Cray.
He is the reason I bought my first Strat.

I put Jeff Beck at the top of my list for Strat players. Here's the order I put my favorite Strat players in:

    Jeff Beck

    Jimi Hendrix

Mark Knophler (he completely changed the way I thought about tone, melodic solos and finesse)

    Eric Johnson

Richie Blackmore (I'm surprised only 2 people here mentioned him)

    Robin Trower

    Steve Vaughn

Dave Gilmore (for his no nonsence, bare bones, highly emotional melodic solos)

Jimmy Page (known more as s Les Paul and Tele player, but his tone and soundscapes all over the Presence album with a Strat were masterfull)

For unmistakeable clean strat tones (in order)- Hank Marvin, Mark Knopfler, Robert Cray, Phil Emmanuel, SRV, Enrico Crevillaro

For unmistakeable dirty Strat tones (in order) - Hendrix, Trower, Beck, Phil Emmanuel, Malmsteen, Johnson, SRV, Clapton, Blackmore, Ian Moss

I've been fortunate enough to see most of them play live (not Marvin, Hendrix, Malmsteen or Johnson). The players that use heavy gauge strings, high actions and tune down a half-step get that destinctive Hendrix-esque Strat sound!
