A buddy of mine is in the band of one of the opening acts, so I got to
go see this guy for free at Shoreline Ampitheater near San Jose, CA.
I'll start off by saying I didn't stay for the whole show. Very simply,
the music was so dreadfully dull, the performance so pedestrian, that it
wasn't even CLOSE to worth putting up with the post-show traffic to see
the whole thing.
The band was tight and competent, most have been with McGraw for a long
time.
But McGraw is a boring singer, without a trace of soul in his voice and
his show is dull, overall. The sophisticated video screens bounced back
and forth between showing the videos to his songs and just a
new-millennium light show.
About the only enjoyable song in the set list was "I Like It, I love
It," and the BAND made that enjoyable, because they played their asses
off. The vocal was delivered with all the passion of the guy reading the
yellow pages. I have to believe his marriage to Faith Hill is what's
kept him on the radar for so long.
I will never understand the appeal of McGraw. How the HELL did he catch
lightning in a bottle with that voice and that show?
Big and Rich was the opening act and without a doubt, they were the most
entertaining act of the evening. Between the two-foot tall dwarf (who
can also be seen in the video of "Save A Horse, Ride A Cowboy") and the
6'5" 260# rapper in a cowboy hat (who is also in the video), they had me
grinning from ear to ear, even if the songs all sounded kind of the
same.
Of course, my bud was the best part of that (no, I ain't naming names)
but Big and Rich actually have a few cool songs that are not the
"novelty" type, and delivered them with some country cred.
Whether B&R's act will have legs remains to be seen, but they're
entertaining and fun. McGraw was just boring. ZZZZZZZZZZ
I can't wait to see Brad Paisley, Wynonna and Lee Roy Parnell later this
year and get some real music.
