    Let's build a guitar

From scratch. What parts would you use. Alder or ash? Tuners? Pups? Pots? Maple or RW? I'm thinkin' hardtail. Maybe LPB in color? Help me get the creative juices flowing, and maybe reduce your GAS at the same time (sometimes it just helps to talk about it).

4lb mahogany hardtail Strat body with that Gibson red transparent finish. Rosewood board on a mahogany Strat neck with slotted Kluson tuners. One Kinman Woodstock p'up in the neck position. One volume knob. Black pickguard. Period.

    My dream guitar...

to build sometime in the distant future:
Tele-style, African mahogany chambered body w/a spruce cap about 3/16" thick. Binding on the top, W/B/W (kind of like Martin appointments).
    Mahogany neck & ebony fingerboard.
    Tummy cut.
Two humbuckers, one volume (near where the switch goes on a trad. Tele) & one pot that fades between the two pickups.
    Hardtail Strat bridge.

Don't need no stinkin' tone control! Not me anyway. Never touch the stuff. In fact, I just might have them removed from all of my guitars.

Let's not build one. By the time you count your labor into the equation, you will spend $3500 or more. And you might be saddled with a one-off Shakey Jake. Tell you a better plan...fun as it might be to do a project like this, if you want a decent NEW guitar, let Custom Shop hand build you a Limited Edition '54 RI. Same money, and you're guaranteed the performance, the looks, the sound and the re-sale.

$3500? You must charge an awful lot for your labor. ;)

LOL! Yeah, maybe. But it won't be a Shakey Jake. Try hand buffing 7 coats of paint with @ 70 coats of laquer to get that deep, hard shine...and tell me you want to work for free!
