Drill bit for tiny starter holes

What size drill bit should one use for string tree and tuner screws?

if you don't have one do yourself a favor and buy a drill index. then you can always check screw sizes. i always drill a size or two smaller than what is needed. that way you get good bite out of the screw. but if it is just for string trees, then you should be able to just screw the screw in and not even drill a hole. just make sure that the tree is where you want it.

For the really small holes, you can use a brad in the drill to make a pilot hole.
