NGDAWBLSMFT-New Guitar Day A While Back Lucky Strike Means Fine Tobacco
Seems a tad slow so I guess I could bring this out. Some of you on the LPF may have seen it so I apologize in advance.
Picked it up a while back. A 58 RI 335. Plays really nicely, feels alive and comfy, and has a very very wonderful sound, the old "articulate and woody" applies here in spades. I was a tad nervous about it as it's a Memphis, but the workmanship is very good. The best VOS jobs are coming out of Memphis on the ES's right now. They DO look older in person. The case is a bad joke though, really flimsy and the latches are shit like the 2013 LP cases. The folks at CME gave me a sterling deal on this one. It has become "Ren's Good Eye". I am having a hard time putting it down. The "EYE" is not really that noticeable in person, it's one of those "in yo' face" thangs in pictures though...

Absolutely stunning.
Are the pickups gold or nickel, I can't tell on this screen?

Gloriously dirty tarnished nickel. Really in need of a good polish they'll never get! Here is a better shot that shows the nickel better.

Re: NGDAWBLSMFT-New Guitar Day A While Back Lucky Strike Means Fine Tobacco
Thanks all. I am glad I found it as the unbounds are selling out. There are still some out there and they are haggling like a Middle Ages Market Vendor on them. The neck is pretty large and it feels great. If I moved a little quicker I could have had the unbound that looked like Kenny's there! Love that with a bit of flame. Not too much though because then it becomes my other 335...

Oddly, though I love flame on other guitars, I prefer an ES with little or no figure.

Re: NGDAWBLSMFT-New Guitar Day A While Back Lucky Strike Means Fine Tobacco
ESs don't get much cooler than this!!!!

I quite agree. The only reason I got the Lemonburst was it tickled me as an "in yo face" kinda thang. I just wish they had done the back and sides in red. I actually asked HM about doing that to it but they wanted the full tilt price for it.

Re: NGDAWBLSMFT-New Guitar Day A While Back Lucky Strike Means Fine Tobacco
I'd like to get the smaller version of the 335 with the same construction. There's two types, one with a solid back that's carved out. I can never remember which is which.
*looked it up. The one I want is the 339, a scaled down version of the 335. The 336 is the carved out solid back version.

I have one I am getting ready to sell. I did not like it until I slapped Wizzes in it. Now it rocks, but I promised the wife I would sell it (actually when I bought it, I just wanted one to play with). Now I like it and would rather not sell, but it is what it is... I have to replace the nut. It was a Custom Shop hanging at GC for a long time so it was pretty scratched and it looks like more than one "luthier" took a wack at the nut, but the price was so good I could not leave it there...

Plus I have this which is about 1/2 way between a 335 and a 336 but the other way. It is a one piece back and sides of hog with a maple center block and 1/2 way size wise between them. Where the 339 screams this one sings a little more sweetly but with punch if you push it.

So many ESes, so few hands to play them all.

Re: NGDAWBLSMFT-New Guitar Day A While Back Lucky Strike Means Fine Tobacco
Or enough to let everybody have a go. Actually the stack is great, you grab the necks and swing them to warm up! But yeah. I bought way too many guitars. And I need to go down a few, but I really do love them all.

Re: NGDAWBLSMFT-New Guitar Day A While Back Lucky Strike Means Fine Tobacco
Such nice guitars! I like the sound of the ES-335s that I've played over the ES-339s that I've played and, even at 5'9" don't find an ES-335 to feel large. I might be listening with my eyes.
I've got a Carvin SH645 which is a smaller bodied double cutaway semi-hollow. It's chambered mahogany with a maple top and is the size of an ES-339, I believe. It has a nice sound, though nothing like an ES-335 or 339. More like a chambered Les Paul- that's not a bad thing, just different.
My ES-225 is awesome, but it's a little too hollow for a lot of the stuff that I want to play.
I have an Epi ES-335 Pro that I bought new for $350. It's a surprisingly great sounding, nice playing guitar. I even dig the look and color. Still, it's not a Gibson and it does have a few small compromises. On the other hand, if you can't get the job done with this guitar (or the SH645 or ES-335), you need to reevaluate. Maybe take lessons or try another hobby.
I'm trying to find a way to get an ES-335 without parting with my '59 ES-225TD or SH645 (I'd part with the SH645 if I found myself not playing it after getting an ES-335, but it's only worth about a third of the price. The Epi would go for sure).

Re: NGDAWBLSMFT-New Guitar Day A While Back Lucky Strike Means Fine Tobacco
The 339's are a great idea. Some of the first few years they did were really good units. The one on my post is a 2013. The Burstbuckers that were in it were pretty badly meh with this particular guitar. I started changing out pickups in it almost immediately, but that is why I bought it. In hindsight it may have been that it was "different" and I was expecting more of a 335 or LP tone. The internal routes on it looked like they were gnawed by a bit that should have been sharpened 30 years ago. There were so many splinters you could build a fire with them. Cleaned it up a tad and started dropping in PU's after changing out the harness. Mules, OX4, Thrōbaks, nothing sounded like what I wanted. Then I tried some Wizzes and it was gold. The guitar really likes them. During the changes I also discovered the caps from RS Guitarworks sound great but break too easy to use in a ES style where you have to fold and unfold the harness to get it in and out. It now has Luxe Bumblebees (or Jensens but I think it was Bumbles) which are a little sturdier. The other Gibby's I have I have never felt the need to change PU's except the Lemonburst above which has DiMarzio Anniversarys (from the Gibson factory that way). But the Collings' I generally do. I have no passion for Lollars and they GENERALLY get changed after a year of two. The other ES I have is a 1998 Nashville 345 that is a 65 reissue I think (pictured above on the bottom of the stack). I may change the PU's in it. But it has a build quality that is stunning.

I came real close to buying one of these from CME's floor model sell off but just couldn't justify spending the money right now (even though it was stupid cheap). I'll have to keep looking at pics of yours.

Re: NGDAWBLSMFT-New Guitar Day A While Back Lucky Strike Means Fine Tobacco
I wanted one of the unbounds pretty bad and they were starting to disappear. CME's price was viciously low and I'm glad I jumped. I absolutely love this thing. It looks and feels like a very well cared for OLD guitar. And the tone is awesome.
I posted up a case complaint/review on the LPF. I did not realize how much the bodies on these varied. My 59 lemonburst is maybe an inch wider on the horns and lower bout, the 345 is 1/2 inch larger top and bottom. The 58 gaps on this SKB case by 1/2 to 1 inch. The SKB was also viciously discounted. So I am keeping it...
