Custom Wound Zhangliqun Strat Pups On The Way!
Can't wait----:odie:
All David's winds have been great so far (PAFs,tele bridge,P-90) and I expect these will sound great too!
They will go in my new project,a '60s style Parts-O-Caster----MIM Classic vintage body,FotoFlame neck (big) and reliced guard.I refretted the neck with big boys.

Love sky blue with rosewood. If only there was a way to keep it from fading to vomit green...

You're in Florida and you don't know? Key lime pie...

Ooohhhhhhhh...........MMMMMMMMMMM............key lime pie!
Never did any food rewind on that one.

Re: Custom Wound Zhangliqun Strat Pups On The Way!
Love my Custom Wound Zhangligun neck Strat pickup, but the overwound bridge, at about 11K, is very microphonic on my acoustically live and hollow sounding resonant Mahogany Strat. Can't say if its the pickup's fault though, but i will be changing it out for a Duncan JBjr humbucking Single coil size pickup.

I would contact David about that one------he goes the extra mile.

Does he have a site you can go to?

Maybe it needs an extra dip in the pot. I'll dip it for free if you want.

Re: Custom Wound Zhangliqun Strat Pups On The Way!
What's the significance of the A5/3 on the bridge pup? It uses both kinds of magnet?
-
Re: Custom Wound Zhangliqun Strat Pups On The Way!
It uses A5's on the wound strings and A3's on the plain steel strings, I've been talking with Dave on building a set for my new 50's style strat, I would love to here how they sound refin as the ones I'm ordering are very close to yours.

Re: Custom Wound Zhangliqun Strat Pups On The Way!
As soon as I can whip these things in I'm going to make some soundclips.
-
Re: Custom Wound Zhangliqun Strat Pups On The Way!
low wound middle, nice choice amigo!
-
Re: Custom Wound Zhangliqun Strat Pups On The Way!
Weaker mid = better cluck/quack. That's my story and I'm stickin' to it...
-
Re: Custom Wound Zhangliqun Strat Pups On The Way!
Okay,I can't wait any longer------these are going in either my original '62 or my MIJ '50s model ('96)------TODAY.
I haven't gotten the pots/switches for the Parts-O-Caster yet.but will next week.I just gotta hear these!

Mid-90s MIJ '50s reissue,Classic 30 amp.
Wow--------chime and fat,a great blend.I can't wait to really put these through the paces.I was standing there alone with a big grin on my face. The pups will go in the original posted guitar (post #1),but for now---I'm gonna track these suckers.
Once again,David has hit it out the park.
-
Re: Custom Wound Zhangliqun Strat Pups On The Way!
For anyone on the fence, let me put it to you this way: David's pickups have saved two different guitars for me from being sold off. That should tell you something...
-
Re: Custom Wound Zhangliqun Strat Pups On The Way!
Played them again today, while teaching........oh man, these are the real deal.Totally honest tonality,no steroid stuff. Each pup sounds so sweet individually;it's been a long time since I've had this. The "quack" is great---the underwound middle pup had plenty of volume, but balances out so well with neck and bridge.Clarity,clarity,clarity.
I think these may stay in the MIJ strat---I'll think of something else for the Parts-o-caster.
-
Re: Custom Wound Zhangliqun Strat Pups On The Way!
First recorded track----played through the setup in post #21.Lots of musical chirp in these babies! Thanks to Mats Nermark for the backing track!

also, as far as the mixed magnet pickups- fantastic neck pickups- soem of the best Ive ever heard, but in my experience they do not work as well in the bridge for some reason
-
Re: Custom Wound Zhangliqun Strat Pups On The Way!
I see it the other way around. Neck usually needs all-A5 so the top doesn't get dull, while the bridge needs A2/3 on the plain to prevent the dreaded icepick...
-
Re: Custom Wound Zhangliqun Strat Pups On The Way!
This bridge wind does great with mixed magnets---I think that, with the slightly underwound mid unit, might attribute to the great quack in position 4.David would know more about that than me.
-
Re: Custom Wound Zhangliqun Strat Pups On The Way!
Which one is 4 anyway? I always thought it was neck/middle.
But yes, I am a believer in weaker mid pu's for maximum quack.
-
Re: Custom Wound Zhangliqun Strat Pups On The Way!
I always count from the neck----
(1) neck
(2) neck/middle
(3) middle
(4) middle/bridge
(5) bridge
This is the best quack I've had on strat pups---way to go David!
More tracks coming............
-
Re: Custom Wound Zhangliqun Strat Pups On The Way!
I think the tradition is to number the positions 1 through 5 from bridge to neck. So 4 would be middle+neck, 2 would be bridge+middle.
Not that it matters a lot! :D

I was messin' around with my old Tremolux tonight, going through the different pickups. The amp was set clean, added compression and reverb. There is a little noise at first because I was close to my monitor.

Tremendous Quackage and the usually awesome playing, kudos!

Re: Custom Wound Zhangliqun Strat Pups On The Way!
refin, you are every pickup's best friend. :appl:
I wish I had your chops, seriously. You seem to be influenced by a lot of my own favorites (Knopfler, Carlton, Steely Dan)...but I can't play like that. If we lived in the same town, I'd be bugging you for lessons. :D
-
Re: Custom Wound Zhangliqun Strat Pups On The Way!
Well thank guys, for the compliments.....I do a ton of takes and cut and paste.
These pups really woke up my MIJ strat RI....I still want to eventually put them in the homebrew in post #1.
-
Re: Custom Wound Zhangliqun Strat Pups On The Way!
Has the homebrew turned green yet?

Re: Custom Wound Zhangliqun Strat Pups On The Way!
It just kills me -- that's my favorite Strat look. Sky blue with dark rosewood board, and I can't seem to find one that will stay blue...
-
Re: Custom Wound Zhangliqun Strat Pups On The Way!
I have cans of Krylon.........it WILL stay blue.
:biglaugh:

Re: Custom Wound Zhangliqun Strat Pups On The Way!
I ordered a humbucker quite a while back and, yeah I am not in a hurry, and yeah, I know David got his work cut out for him (I've talked to him about it the situation is being dealt with), but posts like this thread make me nervous with anticipation.
-
Re: Custom Wound Zhangliqun Strat Pups On The Way!
David will ALWAYS make it right.

Everything I have read inclines me to belive this, and I do not doubt it. I have a discount on my next order because it is taking a while. What is the average turn around for your orders?
-
Re: Custom Wound Zhangliqun Strat Pups On The Way!
Wow,older thread!
Jonnda,David is about as quick as anyone in the biz, considering he is a one man show and is very particular about getting it right. His work is getting to be known more,so wait times might vary.....but I was getting stuff within 3 weeks.
I do want to say that I played a guitar gig two nights this past weekend, and took the winds that I started this thread about in my strat and David's Paul Bunyan tele wind in my '50s tele. The music was roots rock/rockabilly/country,and the guitars sounded fantastic. This was my first real gig out with these winds, and they delivered the goods!
-
Re: Custom Wound Zhangliqun Strat Pups On The Way!
FWIW I am a bit behind due to a massive load of orders that came in in April and I've had to issue all kinds of apologies to those waiting. But wait times are getting shorter again.
-
Re: Custom Wound Zhangliqun Strat Pups On The Way!
It's worth the wait,everyone...........
-
Re: Custom Wound Zhangliqun Strat Pups On The Way!
Nows a good time to thank David for repoting my two overwound bridge pickups. Actually, he rewound one. That was over and beyond what I expected. Thanks"Zhang"
I installed that 10.6k Zhangligun Strat bridge pickup in the bridge of my SRV Start copy the other day, and it sounds fantastic. Not at all what you might expect of an overwound bridge pickup( I thought it might be too loud and arrogant{ha thought i'd introduce new tone terminology}), but sounds very Stratty and just takes the edge of that sometimes brittle sound. Me likey!
-
Re: Custom Wound Zhangliqun Strat Pups On The Way!
I'm working on a track that hopefully will showcase all David's winds he has done for me......P-90,strat,PAF,and tele (my main fling lately!).
-
Re: Custom Wound Zhangliqun Strat Pups On The Way!
I'm in the same boat, Refin. I've got P90, strat and Tele (no PAF yet). I'm looking forward to your tracks.
I played my Daphne Blue Tele with my Zhang pickups last weekend and I just fell in love (again) with my neck pickup. In my experience, Tele neck pickups almost always come up wanting. This Tele I play most of the time with just he Tele pickup.
Mine has no cover. David talked me into it and I am just crazy about it.
