For much of music history, most musicians were sponsored by the church. Bach, Vivaldi (who was a priest) etc would not have been anywhere near as famous if they hadn't written religious music.

That is one great pedal board. I play at church and its either a MIM Fender P Bass into a Yorkville XM 50 with a line out to the board or a miked Cube 30, a Bad Monkey, and a Cray strat.

The problem seems to be big distorted guitars not being appropriate for church? And do you recall that lead tone on "American Woman" was a sound Randy Bachman called "The Beast?" And then later quit the band for religious reasons?
There's something in here about guitar sounds opening seals and gates and stuff. I'm just sayin'....

I am foggy on the history, but there was a time when the Church forbade music in certain modes (If I remember correctly, pretty much anything with a flattenned 5th was bad...That extra note, the flattened 5th, is the also known as the Devil's Interval or 'THE DEVIL'S NOTE') Pentagram??? Pentatonic???

I agree with you other church players...you do have to watch your motive. Refin nailed it...God knows your heart. Fortunately for me we have an incredible lead player on another team that over shadows my playing and keeps me humble.;)
I used to play music at Catholic church for years. Many times I was approached by people who didn't like guitars or other "issues" like drinking at weddings would come up at some events like Baptist or otehr churches we would play at.
I had a whole line of defense from Psalms and such. The whole make a joyfull noise stuff. Even reminded them that Jesus' first miracle was to provide wine for a wedding.
I like it. The tune in my Happy Holidays message to the board is recorded with it and an SD-1. I think it sounds nice.Quote:

Um. I may be a :da for asking this - but exactly WHY does anyone care what another player uses for gear in a church gig? I guess I'm not 'gettin' the WWJD part of this all. IMHO, JC would've said live and let live, and let the player be happy in his/her choice of tools. I doubt JC would worry too much about whether or not a carpenter chose an economy line of tools or the top-shelf premium tools to build the church buildings. It baffles me a little as to why anyone would think he'd care which tools a musician would choose. I guess as a tongue-in-cheek humorous barb, it's cute. But realistically, I think WWJD? - he'd cast no judgement. :)

I think it's a valid question because players want to sound the best that they possibly can regardless of the location.
If the question is asked of me - no, I'm really not kidding. I just 'took' the original post in a way that implied that somehow expensive gear and church gigs were somehow mutually exclusive. Like because it was a church gig that somehow that meant that JC would frown upon spending lavish amounts of $$ on gear. I'm probably all wet - but that's how I took it to mean.Quote:

I agree that Jesus would be more interested in the person's motives than the price tag on his gear. I didn't take the beginning of the thread to mean that it was "better" in church one way or another. I think the WWJD was probably meant simply as a cute way of saying what would (or do we) use in our church gigs. I know that for me personally, I'm always interested in seeing what other players are doing as I think it's a great way to share ideas and maybe I'll see/hear something new that I could apply to my playing... it's about continuing to learn and grow as a player... it's not a contest to see who can spend the most on gear (or play the fastest or...). Just MHO.

WWJD? Was my way of joking (lame maybe) about what would Jesus have in his rig he played guitar in church, growing up to believe that he was very minimalistic.
That guy who owns those pedals is obviously a pedal nerd, as am I. But I was simply joking thinking that most people who play in their church services have only a few effects, honestly! I thought he was joking at first too, but he wasn't.
If you see the thread you would know what I mean -there are people there with very expensive amps and guitars too. I have no issues with anyone buying expensive gear at all. They could all have money and spending $1,500 on a pedal board is nothing, I'm just joking because I've been playing out for years and have shared the stage with 100's of Rock bands and have yet to come across a board like that.

I think the idea that Jesus is interested in your motives is one of the "wrong feet" the church (and therefore all of Western civilization) got off on.
He doesn't care about your motivations, your ideas, your "beliefs." Truth be told, he wants you to transcend all that.
Take for example one of my fave Jesus stories, where the guy comes up to him and says "What do I do to claim the Kingdom of Heaven?" And Jesus says, "Well, keep the commandments and the Sabbath and say your prayers." And the guy says, "Yeah, I already do all that... what else?"
And Jesus looks at him, and sees that the guy still hasn't claimed his enlightenment, still isn't sure. He needs more. He's riding what Zen Buddhists call "the little wheel," while Jesus is all about mahayana, or the Great Vehicle. (Some of us modern wiseguy Zen Buddhists call the old southern way The Short Bus.)
So, anyway, Jesus says, "oh, okay, well... if that's not enough for you... sell all you have and give it to the poor."
And the guy is stunned, walks away crushed. Christ's point isn't that you should sell all you have and give it to the poor (he dusted Judas right off for suggesting that very thing, didn't he?). He was telling you that you can ALWAYS feel like you fall short, you will ALWAYS fail to achieve enlightenment, you will NEVER be good enough.
Jesus knows your motivations are a total horrid mess, every one of you. But he figures you deserve to be loved, anyway. Right?
Yes...that is a tricky subject. But Jesus taught often about motive...a common theme was to remember that our actions as followers are to the glory of God, and not man. Here is an example of one such warning:Quote:

Christ is often concerned with motive, perhaps because it so closely rooted to false teaching. Example being those who would pervert the world for profit. Recall how furious He was with the moneychangers at the Temple for turning his Father's house into a place of business).
Concerning our conversation about the pedalboard. In simple terms (from my sinful and human perspective) I question motive and judge where I should not. But at the same time, I am wary of the smoke and mirrors because ti kept me sway from church for my first 38 years of life. I saw no honesty in it...I doubted the message because the message of God did not get through to me.
That said though, my wife has often told me that if a stupid pop sounding praise song, or a band with Marshal stacks can get some alienated kid into church and closer to God, then by all means crank it up...

Franklin says it all, pretty much. I just don't think Jesus really cares how you make a joyful noise. Just that you make it. And FWIW - IMO it IS judgemental to make a point of how it's funny that a guy has a $1500 pedalboard for a church gig. Otherwise, why bring it up? I know no on else viewed it that way - so I guess I'm alone on my limb. :DQuote:
