Re: Forgive Me Leo for I have Sinned......
:up
Well now that the prayers have been said, I feel forgiven and have gone back to the carnal sin again.......for a tone report.
Now after being Lesterless for a while and and not really having a fine Les Paul in the past (a beat up Deluxe from the 70s and a Custom from the 80s) I must say, these vintage Lesters are really bad boys. The Bursbuckers are supossed to be PAF clones. The tone is fantastic. Through a DRRI and SRRI (this absolves me from my sins against Father Leo) this is just the nuts. Big full fat sounds on the neck pickup. Nice honk in the mids, good bottom end (depending on amp settings) and a push on the highs that I never had with my other Lesters. They were much darker and dull.
The bridge pickup gives searing lead sounds especially with the Fulldrive 2 engaged.
The tone is very controlable except the tone pots suck......nothing really happens when you turn from 10 to say 7 or 6 and then things drop off really fast.
It does sound best through the Deluxe. I think the SRRI is more at home with the Strats and the ES 335 for that matter. This guitar and the Deluxe Reverb just bond!
My biggest gripe was the nut which was very rough (shame on you Gibson) Lucky I have nut files and I smothed them out and all was well once lubed.
All else on this guitar is fantastic. Overall, this is certainly a great addition to the flock and it is as far as tone goes a great deal. A flametop costs over 2 grand more - I mean they look good but wow.....and besides that, I just managed to get this one through the finance director here....:wife:

Congrats to all for their beautiful axes!
I certainly won't cast the first stone...or any other stone for that matter.
Here goes my collection of misdeeds. Suffice it to say the Big Boss :wife: has no idea of even how many I have, let alone how much they cost...let's keep it that way!
Rock on!

Re: Forgive Me Leo for I have Sinned......
I also bought a 57 goldtop RI this year, it was VOS and I took the "swirl & haze remover" that comes in the Fender care kit and cleaned that junk off. I've got the golden/natural colored back. No pics right now, but this post may drive me to take some. I played at least 6 LP the day I bought mine, it was the cream of the crop, love it.
Nice git for sure!

Re: Forgive Me Leo for I have Sinned......
Yes, I used the Swirl and Haze remover first, then the Conditioner and Polish and then the Spray and wipe. Within 3 minutes, all the VOS gunk was gone, the guitar shiny and vintagey looking at the same time.
The 3 level Fender products from Meguires is awesome......used it on a Custom Shop Closet Classic that was a bit hazey as well and it looks killer!

Re: Forgive Me Leo for I have Sinned......
It's kind of cool how the pups don't really shine up though, they're clean, but they look aged, kind of nice.
The owner of the shop I got it from is a long time goldtop player and Gibby seller, he told me that the goldtops seem to wear faster on the areas that your skin touches. I put a few more coats of the polish on the top where my arm hits it, then I use spray and wipe when I'm done.
I know everyone has their view of how you let a guitar age, but I like to play mine hard and try to make them look new as long as possible.
I got my first LP in '73 at 13 and it went through hell and high water, less a few nice dings (battle scares) here and there, the finish always looked pretty nice.
I love everything about them, they are sexy for sure. I love pulling out of the case and feeling the neck in my hand at the moment I'm picking it up. :bonk I know, sick. I can't live with this bug though.
Have fun!

Re: Forgive Me Leo for I have Sinned......
Dang, this thread is going to be my ticket to hell, for coveting, cause I want one of each in those pics. No, wait, I want the very ones in each pic. :) Jeesh, I'm sitting here slobberin, don't even want to look at my MIM strat, WashburnHB35, or Hofner. Certainly wouldn't post images of em here. ;) Outclassed is what I am.
Congrats to all of you on the beautiful axes.

Re: Forgive Me Leo for I have Sinned......
Oh, my......this thread is showing me there are many other sinners. Kepp the guitar porn coming......remember, there has to be a minor inclusion of something Fendery as not to bum out the Fulerton spirits....:appl:

Re: Forgive Me Leo for I have Sinned......
No sin that I can see. A great guitar is a great guitar, no matter who makes it.

Nick, I'm still jealous of your beautiful Gibby Hummingbird - and have fond memories of the lovely, though short-lived, fling we shared that one night, just me, the 'bird, and a bar-girl...

That was more than just a bar girl - she was smokin" That took major cojones to grab the guitar and serenade her at the bar like that. One of the best TFF Jam Moments of all times!

Ahh... But then, how would we know if the R7 referred to a 57, or 67? Is it an official term?

It's the product code on the price list. Not in marketing their literature.
The copies of price lists that I have start with the "code"
LPR7, LPR8, etc.

There was no LP in '67.
The code allegedly comes from numbers stamped in one of the cavities on the Historic series.

For a guy with the online name of GibsonJunkie, I am surprised that you didn't know that! Now, I know that you really are deserving of our affectionate title.

In my opinion the Strat and the Les Paul are the two most rock n' roll guitars an the face of the planet.
