On the base of the bridge in my Am Dlx. it has 2 screws holding it to the body. My son's MIM Std. has 6. Mechanically what is the difference?

The principle reason for Fender going to 2 screws on the enhanced version is less accumulated friction. Since the six screws are almost impossible to get lined up with each other EXACTLY there's a tendency for friction and slippage to build up between them. FWIW my standard mod for vintage style trems for many years was to remove the 2 middle screws, adjust the others so they just skimmed the plate and countersink the holes where the strings exit the block/plate (you'll need to remove the saddles to do this but it dramatically reduces the tendency of the strings to get hung up there). Do this and recut the nut properly (I like more "V" shaped slots on trem guitars) and you'll get a HUGE improvement on vintage trem equipped guitars.
