The Sunday Thread For July 13, 2025
There seems to be some life left in the old girl, yet! It's nice to see some activity again on TFF!
So, I bring you the Sunday thread yet again. Boring, I know. But it's our weekly "check-in" so if you haven't had anything to say for the past week, now's your chance to just pop in and let us know you're still alive.
If you're a regular (count me in) top off the past week and prep us up for the next. I'll start.
The folk club is having a "theme night" on Tuesday: Let Freedom Ring. I have two songs in my repertoire that I'm very comfortable playing, so if I arrive early enough I'll get a chance to get on the board. For those with an interest, those songs are Jack Traylor's "Flowers of the Night" (often mis-attributed to Paul Kantner) and Michael Nesmith's "Roll With the Flow." Just to be sure, I've been practicing them every day. Today will be no exception.
Other than that, it's a pretty normal Sunday. Yesterday was my granddaughter's 12th birthday, so her mom and I took her shopping. I bought them lunch and then we went to Lululemon where she got a bunch of dance clothes. Her family is going to the beach this week for a dance competition/vacation. Later, we had a dinner party for her with cake. Got home pretty late, so since I began the day with a five mile walk, I was pretty tired. Today, it's strictly relaxation!
I enjoy reading your posts and interacting in some small way with you folks, so keep it up! Have a great Sunday!
Re: The Sunday Thread For July 13, 2025
I have charted and learned 18 songs on bass this week for an audition tomorrow night.
Good band with gigs booked.
I am out of my depth! I just began playing bass a couple months ago, had some immediate success playing with others and got cocky.
Not going to play today. My hands desperately need a rest.
The more I learn about playing bass, the more I'm seeing how inept I am at it. What was I thinking?!
It's really difficult to completely change my approach to music and a new instrument. Sure, I could hack my way through it, but that's not the kind of player I want to be. I will never be "great" at it, but I want to at least be really good so I can play in good bands.
Anyway, it's tomorrow night and I just don't want to feel like I'm wasting the band's time. I know how I've felt when people have shown up completely unprepared to audition in some of my band's.
THE PRESSURE !
Later this morning we're off to buy a used dresser, have a late breakfast, hit the transfer station and go see the movie F1 in a theater with recliners. Nice day ahead!7

Howdy folks! new tune done and a few more in the works... I posted over in the On the Road section since it seemed closest to the right thread. Been playing my Acoustasonic a LOT... IT won't be everyone's cup of tea, but I'm really loving playing it which means I'm playing a lot more. Finally overcoming the mental block that arrived when I lost half my finger.... Excited for what ever comes next!
Re: The Sunday Thread For July 13, 2025
Well lets see. Yesterday the wife and I went and looked at 4 acres for sale. It's a no go. The dip referenced is a 30 ft vertical change in elevation and it will be another 25K to clear enough to build a house.
Within the same area, we found a house for sale. Its only on 1 acre, but the trees are such you do not see neighbors. Leaving shortly to go see it (our realtor wasn't available yesterday to show it to us). It will place us less than an hours from her family as well as my work. I think this is the area for us.
Collected a consignment check yesterday for the Oxblood LP Std that sold. While there I played a Yamaha acoustic that I was showed the week before (I didn't play it then as my focal dystonia was acting up to bad to give it a proper try out). Its in their FSX5 Red Label series. They have a D and a 000. I am interested in the 000. All solid woods of hog and a really good pickup system (3 way). Ebony board to boot. Blows the doors off my Martin laminate hog 000. Tried it there against a solid hog martin 000 street series. Blew the doors of off it as well. Then compared it against a true 000-18. It equaled it. The tonal structure is a little shifted up from lower midrange to upper midrange, but I can work with that. The Martin 000-18 with no pickups is 1K more than the Yammy. Seriously giving it consideration.
I also sa after I left they got a used Gretsch Country Gentleman. I have always considered one, but after playing my friend's, I knew if I found the right one, I would get one. Planning a trip tomorrow to go play it and work a deal. I have another LP I was going to sell, but thinking that LP, the Martin 000 hog and say 100-150 in cash may land me these 2. Net count impact is 0.

after waiting all day last week for the electrician to show, found out they forgot to put us on their calendar. Current earliest date to show is the 31st of July. Pushes out completion date probably to the middle to end of August. Oh, well. Who wanted to play guitar anyway?
Hoping for an open mic this weekend at my old time watering hole. They're going low key, word of mouth, every 3rd Saturday. This will be the second one. I may bring the bass if I play it at all this week. Today will be re-string the Les Paul and give it a board conditioning and polish the body up. May not sound like much but given how little else I've done music wise it's a good step.

Played a bit at a blues fest Saturday and did a little MC work also. A fun time with some really top notch musicians, and I got to see a lot of old friends.
