Bob Newhart's phone call routine made him his own straight man. He was already an established comedian in the entertainment, industry by the time I was old enough to know who he was. I don't know a world without Bob Newhart!

Back in either 1999 or 2000 the band I was in was booked as the opening act for Bob Newhart at a theater so I got to meet him. I was surprised what a quiet, unassuming guy he was.
