New Guitar, Defective or Not
I just received a new Fender Duo Sonic. Everything seems to be fine except that the high e and a little bit the B, buzz. The relief seems correct but the string height for that E string is maxed out at the highest level. If I try to make it higher the little screws fall out. So my question is, is this defective and I should exchange it or is this fixable and worth it. I know I can put in a new nut, but if it's been cut a little bit lower I'll have to start making some adjustments. I just don't know if this is a sort of thing that would be expected and up to me to fix.
Re: New Guitar, Defective or Not
It sounds like the slots for the E and B strings were cut a skosh too deep.
Some shimming with a tiny drop of CA glue in each might set things right.

That makes sense. I could just as easily exchange it but this sounds easy enough. Thank you

If it's a new guitar, I'd say to take it to a professional. Something like that might |(I don't know this...|) mess with the warranty, and any fixes should be covered under warranty.

If it's really the fault of the overworked nut ->
Let's go for warranty

Re: New Guitar, Defective or Not
The neck needs a shim at the forward-most edge of the neck pocket. This is normal, although ot should have been done properly before it left Fender.
If you have not done this before, bring it back to where you bought it and ask them to set it up properly. Ask if you can watch so that you might learn how it's done.
No big deal.

StewMac makes really nice neck shims too.

Yeah, they stole the tapered shim idea from me!
