P-Bass Authenticity?

Played a nice lefty P-Bass today; I was surprised I liked it because I usually don't. Perhaps the maple neck lent note definition. The store is asking $600 for it (U.S. made).

Anyway, I'm a little suspicious. The body has a black gloss finish; the pickup cover is white; the volume & tone knobs are knurled chrome. The pickguard is one-ply, and isn't really seated correctly.

Am I right in thinking that there should be a Fender mark in the neck pocket if I pull the neck off? Or is there some other way to determine if it's the Fender body that goes with the Fender neck (which seems authentic)?
