Question for Wade, Jdub, Kenny, Roger and all you friends
So, as you friends might have read in my latest posts, I finally got the band straight and we have a new drummer, he's getting along just fine with our project and we do mostly classic rock with some blues and country thrown in.
Well, it happens that our formation is the simple 4 dudes, 2 guitarists (the other one sings), 1 bassist and 1 drummer.
We try to keep our setlist simple and functional, avoiding songs that feature keyboards, piano, and any effects that will demand another player or arranging a guitar to do something it ain't meant to do.
But it also happens that some songs fit our taste and setlist like a glove, my favorite is Roadhouse Blues, by the Doors. I don't need any drugs to get high playing that song, and it sounds KILLER when played on an overdriven SSS strat or Tele (sorry Mr. Krieger, I know you dig SGs but for that one Fenders rock).
Many people play it without the piano/keyboard, but I don't know.

My question is: suppose you attend a local gig, and the guys play that song without the keys. Would you like it as much, or would you feel that something is missing? Your opinion is VERY important. We'll give it a go next saturday at the studio rehearsal, but I'd love to know what other musicians think.

Re: Question for Wade, Jdub, Kenny, Roger and all you friends
"Roadhouse Blues" was one of our staples, and our orchestration was the same as your band -- two guitars, bass, percussion.
Another song along that same vein that I heartily recommend and which is often overlooked is "I Think I Love You Too Much" by the Jeff Healey Band.

Agreed - on having it played with or without keys - we sometimes have harp and have had horns, on occasions when guys are there. Just my opinion, but it will be what you make of it.
and please forgive me - but what is this "setlist" you speak of?

The list of the songs the band plays in a set, a repertoire.

de Melo - was being funny -
we rarely use a set list - the guys I play with typically call the key and sometimes a title, when they are feeling generous -
Hold on tight and run with it!

Re: Question for Wade, Jdub, Kenny, Roger and all you friends
Almost every band I've played in, all cover bands, had two guits, drums, and bass. Keys can add a lot to your sound, but I think people are fine with guit/bass/drums. I found that on many songs, you can get rid of the keys and you've still got good rock and roll.

lol sorry about that, brother. My English is not so good and I must say I'm quite a bit rusty, sometimes I feel that I don't really make sense :bh
Now I understood what you mean.

Personally, I'm a big fan of keys, especially organ, a la Deep Purple.
I can't speak specifically to the song you mention, but I have been in situations where we had to do songs with a little bit different instrumentation.
In most cases, it works...if it looks like you mean it! If you adjust your parts such that you cover the holes left by the missing instrument, no worries.

Slight derail - sorry - but had to mention - Tommy sometimes shows up here and travels with Deep Purple - guitar tech extraordinaire
