what is a good way to go if you want to get some totally gnarly echo? i think the old sun records kind of thing is what i want, but i also don't want to break the bank on something like this. is there anyhting like that that is not really pricey? thanks
A GREAT, authentic sounding slapback can be obtained from old DOD FX-90 analog delays. They usually go for between $40-80 on Ebay. Be forwarned that they are otherwise kinda lame in that they chop off some high end (which helps mimic the old tape delays) and have a relatively small amount of delay time available (bad if yer David Gilmour). The battery hatch comes off 'em easily too (another duct tape situation). However, for rockabilly I haven't found a better one without going to real tape.
