what do you strat guys use to "rawk"?
buddy of mine has a new project in the works and wants to upgrade the pups in his squire strat to something with a pretty chunky rock sound (they're doing metallica, alice in chains, STP, that type of stuff).
I'm not really a strat guy, or even a particularly "rawk" guy anymore, but I told him I'd ask around...

I use Chris Kinman's HX-85 in the bridge for metal... It's found in the Woodstock Plus set...

Re: what do you strat guys use to "rawk"?
I think I would suggest some form of humbucker in the bridge spot with a new pickguard pre-routed for HSS. On the least expensive side of things, he could try out some of the GFS offerings, or go for a Gibson 490T, Duncan, or EMG (if that's his sort of thing).

+1
New guard routed for a bridge bucker (the body should already be routed for one), and a hot humbucker. That should take your friend's Squire from "rock" to "rawk."

That natural ash one looks real nice. But I guess natural ash always does. :D
-
Re: what do you strat guys use to "rawk"?
Much better than un-natural ash.
-
Re: what do you strat guys use to "rawk"?
Heh. Yeah. That would be the ash they hide under opaque finishes. Because it's...unnatural.

Re: what do you strat guys use to "rawk"?
A Les Paul. :arhhh: :bonk
Seriously though, throw a humbucker in there. A PAF style Humbucker works for Eddie Van Halen. Didn't he get the humbucker for his frankenstrat from a 1960something ES-335?

Re: what do you strat guys use to "rawk"?
Throw a Duncan JB Jr in there and you'll be happy.
-
Re: what do you strat guys use to "rawk"?
A Les Paul :biglaugh:
Seriously though, the with the mid-boost and the lace sensors....the same guitar.

Re: what do you strat guys use to "rawk"?
well, he's got a Paul, I think he wants something that cuts through the mix a little on certain things. he's thinking 'bout the kinman Hx85.

Re: what do you strat guys use to "rawk"?
I've been playing my friend's double fat strat (two humbuckers) and it sounds great with gain. I'm not as crazy about the clean tones.

DIMArzio SDS_1. A classic.
It might look like a Strat guitar pickup, but the SDS-1™ adds balls, gain and warmth reminiscent of the best old soapbar pickups. The adjustable pole pieces don't pull as hard as regular rod magnets, so you can get the pickup closer to the strings for stronger output. The highs are less exaggerated and the bottom is deeper than most singles for a rounder, darker tone. If your guitar's bridge position sound is too edgy, without the push needed to drive your amp, remedy the situation with an SDS-1™. Add a pair of Class of 55™ pickups for sparkle, or a Class of 55™ in the neck and an FS-1™ in the middle for even tone choices.
Recommended For: Bridge position.
Tech Talk: The bar magnets that power the SDS-1™ are ceramic, but the sound and feel are very similar to Alnico-equipped soapbars, partly due to the big steel polepieces and spacer bar. This type of magnet structure also has noticeably less magnetic pull than standard rod-magnet pickups, even though the output is very high for a single-coil.

If you don't wanna change the pickguard to a hummer,
go for Lace REDS...They truly SCREAM.
A lot of people don't like them but, IMHO, if you like to play with
distortion/fuzz/overdrive, you'll absolutely love theese pups.
Lace sensor reds!

I heard that Billy Corgan from Smashing Pumpkins used a Lace Sensor Red in the Bridge on the early albums. Pretty heavy sound.

Re: what do you strat guys use to "rawk"?
PAF style 'buckers if he's gonna want to maitain clarity - I used SD 59'ers exclusively for years before discovering the virtues of handwound pups though they're still PAF spec - if he just wants 'rawk' as in rawk-ous - there are loads out there that won't even require changing the 'guard - I've used a JB Jr and it was a damned good pup if a bit on the hard side - a lot of that GFS stuff looks damned tempting as well - I'm about to spring for some Nashville Filtertrons when they get 'em back in I've just checked their stock of strat stuff and they're out of Lil Killers as well - might be worth the wait at $25!!!

Re: what do you strat guys use to "rawk"?
Anyone else tried that SDS-1 in the bridge position (like jerryjg suggested)? Seems tempting...

The SDS1 is a great sounding P90ish pup. Fat and loud. Probably one of the hottest strat pups before you start getting in the humbucker realm. In the 80’s I had two Floyd Rose equipped strats with SDS1s in the bridge position. They sounded great plugged in to a pegged 50 watt JCM800 (I was playing metal back then). They rocked pretty well.

Thanks stroke...
A user review I read on the m/f site mentioned that they thought the p/u was real noisey. But that was the only person who mentioned that, perhaps they had it wired wrong?

Its still a single coil so there is some 60 cycle buzz. They sound great though.

Does anyone know if that p-up will "drop in" to the bridge position without having to cut the pickguard?
One online seller wrote; "The Seymour Duncan JB Jr. is a twin coil design pickup that gives you the character of their popular JB Model Humbucker in a single coil size." Implying that it should drop in, yes?

Re: what do you strat guys use to "rawk"?
Sorry so long to reply. Yes the JBjr will drop in. ..and it sounds good to boot!!!!
