watched "Buddy Holly Story" wrong Strat used
I would think they would get a correct era strat for the movie.
Buddy died in 1959... but in the movie, the last concert Buddy played, they showed Gary Busey using a 70s Strat with big headstock. DUH!!!
whats up with that?

No one except nerds like those that hang around here would know or care. That's what's up about that.

Sure, and young Buddy was playing a Fender Bronco.

Re: watched "Buddy Holly Story" wrong Strat used
They always said that Buddy was ahead of his time.

Remember "Back To The Future"? When Michael Fox (can't remember his character's name) ripped through "Johnny B. Goode", he's playing a'59 ES 345 ............in 1955!:bonk

Re: watched "Buddy Holly Story" wrong Strat used
Yeah, Tom! But what AMP did Marty McFly kick over while playing that?!
At least it wasn't some SS thing.
-
Re: watched "Buddy Holly Story" wrong Strat used
Marty McFly - right! :salud: I remember a tweed amp - Bassman?
Narrow panel - not available in '55 either?:speechles

Re: watched "Buddy Holly Story" wrong Strat used
That Thing You Do got all the guitars right and all the drums, but there was a Sabian cymbal on the set and they weren't in busibess then.

Re: watched "Buddy Holly Story" wrong Strat used
Was there really a string section on that tour?
I saw a stage version of the Buddy Holly Story that really kicked ass.
I can't recall if the gear was period correct or not.

Re: watched "Buddy Holly Story" wrong Strat used
The guitar for Back to the Future was provided by Norman Harris of Norman's Rare Guitars. He said that he had originally provided a period correct blonde 3 pickup ES5 Switchmaster which the movie production kept for 6 weeks but the art director wanted something red with a whammy bar so Norman gave them the '61 Es345 which they were OK with and kept for another 7 weeks and had to rent a couple of extra times for a couple of reshoots.

Re: watched "Buddy Holly Story" wrong Strat used
It's the little details that count! The Buddy Holly flub was pretty bad. The producers did not do their homework.
-
Re: watched "Buddy Holly Story" wrong Strat used
They're movie people, not guitar geeks. Plenty of anachronisms in movies.

Re: watched "Buddy Holly Story" wrong Strat used
You think the 70s Strat was a balls-up? Well, according to a thread on http://www.vintageiwear.com (run by and for opticians with a special interest in historically relevant spectacle frames) the frames "Buddy" is wearing in that film didn't come out until _1965_! They got the "Bookman model D" when Buddy made the _model Bs_ famous. You can spot it a mile off apparently (but only if you're wearing your glasses.)

Ha! I looked up a clip on YouTube and it is, indeed, a narrow-panel of some sort...great eye! There's no logo plate on it, but it does look tweed-ish. Can't tell from the video quality. I was honestly looking for some '60s blonde nubtex, but it's too hard to see. :D

Re: watched "Buddy Holly Story" wrong Strat used
I saw La Bamba recently, and I am pretty sure they got Buddy's guitar right in that one. It was a sunburst early 50's style, at least.

Yep. I remember it well. It's way before repro's, so it's gotta be legit.

Wasn't that the professor's guitar that he left on the passenger seat of the Delorean?

Plus, I don't know if Marty McFly would have been able to see over the side of a Switchmaster.

Re: watched "Buddy Holly Story" wrong Strat used
No different than when in TV shows or movies they often have the sound of a hammer being cocked or a slide being racked on a weapon that is already ready to fire.
Ahh, the curse of knowledge on film enjoyment.
-
Re: watched "Buddy Holly Story" wrong Strat used
I really like the sounds of tires squeeling, on dirt roads on television or in movies.
-
Re: watched "Buddy Holly Story" wrong Strat used
For that matter - how about the sound of explosions in space?

Re: watched "Buddy Holly Story" wrong Strat used
... and my wife thinks I'm bad for tearing up "her" movies about minutia that's messed up. You guys elevate that to a whole 'nuther dimension!
I hadn't even noticed the stuff you guys have picked up on -- I just enjoyed the movies!!!!
