    Holy Jazz Bass Trivia--Entwhistle

I had always assumed that "My Generation" was played on a Precision or a Danelectro. But I just read that he recorded it with a sunburst Jazz Bass. That would help to explain the great growl and snarl.

Wonder what he used on Live At Leeds? One of his Fenderbirds?

He was never that guy who played bass just because nobody wanted him as a guitarist. He loved his basses and loved to collect them. He's one of the few busy bassists I've heard who could pull it off.

It helped that his guitar player wasn't fighting with him... Townshend was about big rhythm, leaving a lot of sonic space for "lead bass."

    Well, they weren't fighting sonic-wise...
But really, The Ox was more the lead player in The Who - Pete was more the rhythm guy.

I've always thought that about the two. And for years, I thought that meant Townshend wasn't much of a lead player. Then when I began playing guitar in earnest, I realized what a great lead player Townshend is. But in a way, all three of the played "lead" and somehow made it still work.
