You guys are gonna laugh at me...

But I'm thinking of going "active" with the return of my original J bass! It's a crappy Epiphone that I recently got back from a friend. I've got the body, bridge, tuners, and a nice pre amp. It's black, so I plan on slapping a Tort guard and gold hardware on it. This is gonna be done on a shoe string budget, so that's where my question lies. Do I get a set of GFS pups ($52), or do I spring for a set of DiMarzio's ($100)? I'm leaning towards the DiMarzios,, I've always liked their products.

I'm also gonna go with a maple neck for extra "clank". This bass will mainly be used at church, since they/I go for a more "new school" tone. I'm not really a J dude, but I think this'll be the ticket.

So am I over thinking this? I have a feeling that I am. I'm going GFS for just about all the parts. Wouldn't it make sense that I get their active J pups while I'm at it? Help this out!!!

A buddy of mined uses GFSes in a few of his guitars and loves them.

Where are you getting the neck?

I'm not against active, but I'm a dyed in the wool old school kinda guy. But like I said, at church the bass tones need to have the "sheen" that active provides. I think for now I'll just get the GFS pups and get this bass rolling. I'm only working part time, so $ is tight... I've used several of their pickups, some were good, others not so good.

I ordered the parts tonight, should be here next week. I'll post more when I get to working on her.

So I ordered two necks today from Rondo music. Both are maple with block inlays. One is black, the other is pearl. The black block will go on my Epi Jazz, the pearl will go on my Jazz Stingray. I'm getting really excited, pictures will be up in the next couple days.

I'll have to wait on finishing the "Ray J" as I've decided it needs a Badass II bridge. There is NOTHING else that will suffice... But I'm broke til next payday. Oh well, that gives me time to get the finish done on the body. I'm going hand rubbed oil and clear.

    Peace y'all!

Watch it, chucko, you're quickly becoming a one man guitar factory.

I can't hardly wait either!!!! My GFS order will be here Monday, the necks Wednesday, and I'll play my "new" jazz bass Thursday. "I love it when a plan comes together!"

The Ray J will be on the back burner until I can afford a Badass bridge. BUT! I do have ANOTHER bass that I can put together... Let's just say that it's missing its frets, and ^someone^ thought it was a good idea to use the 335's construction techniques... That's all I can say for now, but trust me, it'll be up to my normal "out there" standard procedure and protocols...

I just installed a Gotoh 201 bridge on my fretless Jazz, and can't see the reason to spend more on a Badass or Hipshot when you get a bridge this nice for 40 bucks. Not to say you don't have your reasons, but this bridge was recommended to me by a couple of seriously good players and they weren't wrong.

Ok, wiring tonight. Forgoing the external preamp for now. When I get more money I'll change the pups out to something nicer. But either way, I'll be rolling active. I'll be posting pics soon.
