    Hotrodding a Squier Jag.

Bought this baby about 6 months ago. Sounds great unplugged, fit and finish are nice, and plays good! It's silver sparkle too! It sounded great in the store, but I wasn't impressed with it live. My gripes are that it only has a soapbar bridge pup and active electronics... Yuck! I contemplated installing a Stingray pup but since I'm building another bass like that I decided not to.

So what I decided to do is build a "hot" J. I am also stepping outside my "norm" & using Lace Alumitone pups. A friend has one of the HB's in his JR, and I gotta tell ya'll, it sounds DAMN fine!!! They are a HiFi passive Pickup, very interesting design! I'm yanking the active circuit out all and wiring it like my Ric. I plan on mainly using this bass at church where "that" tone is what I'm after. There I mainly use my Ric or the P bass loaded with a Gibson Recording bass pup, which is also a passive low impedance pup. I use my high impedance basses in straight ahead rock bands or the bkuez band I play in.

I'll post progress pics as I make headway. Tonight I pulled the control plate and neck. Tomorrow I'll route, then it's just waiting on the pups.

Been hurting, so haven't wired them yet. Looking on the Lace site they recommend 250K vol pots... Kinda weird, but if that's what the say. I just figured 500K...

Have yet to plug her in, I finished her up last night. I also need to decide on the knobs, but here she is!!! I LOVE the way this bass looks.

As in I did good? Cuz I'm REALLY digging the look! I have a problem with the wiring, but will have to tackle it later as my hand is KILLING me from working on it... I think it's the tone pot cuz everything reads fine up to that point.

    Re: Hotrodding a Squier Jag.

Great minds think alike my friend!

I plugged her in tonight... IT'S ALIVE!!!

It's growly as SHIT! I only played her a little bit, but from what I heard I think I got it right. I need to wire in a coil tap still on the bridge pup, but so far I like it. I'll have to really put her the paces, but it's on the right path.

I also need to get some knobs, and do the racing stripe. I'll post pics when she's complete.

Now I'm imagining a scene from Frankenstein. You don't have a humpback assistant named Igor do you?

    Re: Hotrodding a Squier Jag.

Still have yet to put knobs on her or paint the racing stripe. I've been recouping from my second wrist surgery, and sidetracked with some of my other "extra curricular" activities. BUT, and it's a big but, I got the pickups dialed in. I've found that's there's DEFINITELY a "sweet spot" with these pups, more so than other pups I have/used. With that said, I think I've got em where I want/like em. I am very happy with the results! They are HI/FI without sounding processed or fake. Still have yet to play them in a real gig setting. But I think they're gonna shine at church, which is where I plan on using this bsss. That setting calls for " sound. Normally I use my Ric, P with a Gibson Recording bass pup, and now this bass and/or my Stingray J (when it's done).

My olde skool basses are used for the RAWK and bluez settings.
