So, two pickups, how do YOU use them?

Just curious how my other bass thumping amigos dial them in. Personally I just set everything all the way up and vary where I play to get different tones. Or I'll roll the vol and tone of the bridge pup back a hair (70-80%) & roll with that. Really, I'm just bored and wanted to "geek" a little.

Chuck, I've been having a blast, dialing up blends of the two pickups on my JB. I get so many different tones that way.

I'm not really a bass player but I have a Jazz Bass for when I need on and feel the same way.

Sometimes I roll the front pup of a Jazz back about halfway,to get that bridge pickup grunt to poke through. But like everyone else,it depends on the tune....sometimes a neck Jazz by itself sounds great.

I've got a Squier fretless jazz bass. I rewired it to have a master volume, blend, and tone. I vary the blend quite a bit. When I roll it toward the neck and turn down the tone I get a very good approximation of an upright - the tape wound strings help with that. Rolling it to the bridge and turning up the tone gives me a relatively funkier sound. Not that I have a single ounce of funk in my entire body.

I've been working on my funky slaps and pops. I'm not great at it yet, but I'm working on it. It's just a shit load of fun.

CH Willie, I've tried to do that but don't have the patience, it's like when I play a Les Paul...

    Very interesting guys.

Re: So, two pickups, how do YOU use them?

I am not a fancy player - stay in the pocket, try to stay in my register for the most part......

Best compliment i ever got was from an old black guy at a blues bar - gray hair, gruff voice, drinking scotch.....
He said "I'm gonna call you small Change - you ALWAYS in the Pocket!"

That setting seems to help me stay there more than a present snappy poppy kind of thang.

I may actually sometimes roll the bridge pup back just a smidge to put the neck pup more in the front....

    thats about it though.......

That's how I roll, no snapping, slapping, popping, or clank for me. I stay in the pocket and nail the changes and turn arounds. I do pull out a pick to "grind" a little, a la John Paul Jones or Sir Paul.

I had to give up my Bootsy technique when the wrist got bad... JK, he's Badass but I can't play like that, nor have any desire to. No offense meant cuz I think he's awesome.

I'm not a big fan of slapping, but I want to be able to do it just for giggles and shits. I'm usually a low-end rumbler.

There are a couple songs where it'd be nice for me to be able to, but sadly I never learned those tricks.

Chuck, slapping can be good, but a lot of players overuse it. It's tempting. But you don't need that skill anyway. Many of the best bassists have never slapped or popped a single note.

Re: So, two pickups, how do YOU use them?

Many Bass players I know that have great slap/Pop technique are weak at good straight ahead groove - lock to drums kinda playin. I recommend to get the basics down 1st - then when yer solid there - then the flash. Flash without solid groove is sort of like premature ejaculation - your rythm section partners feel pretty let down and may not want to do it again with you.

Re: So, two pickups, how do YOU use them?

That has to be THE BEST analogy I've ever heard!

I was being sarcastic in some of my posts, I have NO desire to Pop'n'slap. Nothing wrong with it, it's just that I mainly play rock, blues, and country. While I can appreciate a good bass player/playing of any genre, I adhere to the school of Dusty Hill. That's my bag, baby!

Re: So, two pickups, how do YOU use them?

I'd rather have Dusty Hill in my band than a thousand poppers. I just want to be able to do it in case it comes in handy, a bit for the arsenal.

I've had the opposite experience. Bass players I've worked who had the widest range of techniques were also the best players in terms of rhythm and groove. Dusty Hill? Uh, ok... I'd rather have Chuck Rainey.

Re: So, two pickups, how do YOU use them?

I sat in the 3rd row for Bonnie Raitt and Keb Mo a couple of years ago - Hutch was really ON.....but my props go to Reggie McBride! He is EXACTLY what I want to be when I grow up!

Met Jimmy Trapp (Walter Trout Band) before he passed - and he is as solid as you could ever ask for.

Scot Sutherland from Tommy Castros Band was also one of the most solid cats I would like to emulate!

Thats more like how I want to roll these days
