NBD--2012 Fender Am. Std. Jazz Bass

UPS delivered the bass and the Rumble 350 combo, but I had 10 minutes to play--later I've got time to play.

So far so good, but I've got to explore both tonight.

My OCD kicked in on the colour too. It's sunburst to match my Tele and Strat.

Sorry for the quality of the photos.

I've had time to play it. Sounds great, but I've got a lot of experimenting to do with the amp and bass settings. The bass is the first of 7 or 8 Fender instruments that I've order that hasn't come set-up properly. I'll get to it over the next few days. It's intonation. The neck is good and straight. It feels good when I play it. I played about thirty minutes. Found some good tones. It's a versatile bass compared to my Ric. (Hope my Ric will forgive the unfair comparison).

Apples and oranges, trust me, I know! I've never played a guitar or bass that I haven't tweaked the action on. I really think that's a pipe dream, cuz everyones technique is different.

I reckognize that desire chucko. My OCD was kicking in, and I HAD to have the JB. It's a great bass, gets lots of different tones.

Sadly, I'm in the middle of a divorce. Fortunately, I've bought myself the JB and amp as my consolation prize. And yes, I do feel better.

You just relit my desire for a Rick bass. But doing what I do, I can't justify owning a second bass that costs more than any two of my guitars put together!

I hate to tell you, but when I bought the Ric in 78, I paid $560-80 for it. People tell me that it sounds like a fretless bass, probably because of the small fret wire. I do get some great Paul McCartney and Rush tones.

Weird, my Ricky sounds NOTHING like a fretless! It has the old skool "clank" not the new horn enhanced harsh crap people are doing. Pure rock'n'roll bay bee.

Yeah, mine is smooth, but it can get clanky. Slapping doesn't work. The pickups are really weak. I'm thinking of getting new pickups.

It seems like I may be the only Rick owner who has loud pickups, everyone else bitches about their output.

I didn't know that was a common problem. The Ric is really week compared to the JB.

Sorry amigo, not trying to hijack. From what I've read on the interwebs other peoples' Ricks have low output pups. Mine is the loudest bass I own! So IDK.

But again, congrats on your new bass!

Thanks everybody. I'm really enjoying the JB. I think I've got a keeper.

As for the Ric, I learned something about 'bridging out the capacitor" on the existing pus. I have no soldering skills and I don't understand the mod in any case.

Some older Rick circuits have a series capacitor in them to cut lows. If you short across it, you effectively eliminate it from the circuit.

Does it involve soldering? If not, what would I expect to see and do?

Ok - I am back to a place I can use a PC and wanted to weigh in on your new bass! VERY nice - I can't speak intelligently about the Rick - but that is Chucks area anyway!

I am a huge fan of SB and Tort! Looks like a keeper to me!

Thanks, Frank. I'm loving the SB and tort. Quite elegant looking. And it is a very nice bass. Thanks for your comments.

The wood is not specified by Fender, so I've emailed them, asking what wood they're using. If I get an answer, I'll let you know. Mine is a very light bass. I'm just hoping it's not basswood. Usually, Fender uses alder and ash on the Am. Std.s.

I am not an expert - but would guess alder.

A standard is pretty much THE Standard -
I wish any of my first 13 basses had been that nice!

Re: NBD--2012 Fender Am. Std. Jazz Bass

Thanks, Frank. In the past I've been a pick bassist, but I've hardly used a pick with it; it responds to touch so well. Interestingly, on other forums, there's a lot of trash talk about the 2012 Am. Stds, especially the Jazz Bass. I don't have a large frame of reference, being a lefty, but it sounds great and plays so well. Trash talk doesn't seem to add up, at least not with mine.

String it up and play it - everything else is BS

Seriously - if it doesn't play well and is set up about right - might be something wrong - everything else is Snobery !!!

You got a playin machine there Sir!

That's the only way to judge one at the end of the day. After a weekend of thump-ita-bowwwwwwang, I'm fairly smitten.

Took it out for a little jamming last night. It growls and it rumbles. That's what I was looking for.
