    Amp ideas?

Hey y'all! I've got a friend who's looking for a current manufacture amp that he can gig with. He doesn't have a lot of dough (I'm thinking he's in the $200 range), and he's not averse to solid state.

He's a Marshall guy, and he's finally figuring out that his 2203 and 2010 half stacks (downsized from full stacks) are just too big for the local pizza joint and casual jam.

He's simply looking for a single 12 combo that does a decent Marshall-y sound. Doesn't need any fx, except maybe reverb. Clean and dirty switching would be helpful, but not absolutely necessary.

    Any thoughts?

Peavey C30 is a lot of bang for the buck imo and might get close to the sound he's looking for.

Agreed on the Peavey C30 and would like to add Vox Valvetronix VT40

Thanks. The C30 does have a lot of Marshallesque things in the schematic.

One I just thought of that would work well, but you can't find them anywhere, would be the Trademark 30.

I think you could go a long way on a Vox AC15VR - the one I have with the Valve Reactor instead of tubes. It's got the clean-to-dirty footswitch and a lot of range to its sounds, and it's only about $300 new. I know that's a bit more than he wants to spend - anyway it's not Marshall but the overdrive treads into that Marshall territory...

On the other hand, why not just pick up an SS Marshall? Like one of those MG4 series.

I'm a bit wary of the MG Marshalls. I don't hear good things about them.

OTOH, he seemed pretty impressed with the VT-40's set of features. He may go that way. Thanks!

I was going to mention that one.
It only has a 10" though.
He'd need to understand that it has active eq too.
Some amp tryers miss that before declaring that they suck.
He would get plenty of versatility too, much like the choice of toppings in the pizza joint.

I jam with a guy who uses one of these- an older 50 watt version. He gets decent tones out of it. Closely listened to, it's not wonderful, in the context of a band, it gets the job done.

    Nothing succeeds like excess.

    He's now looking at this

    http://kustom.com/product_detail.asp...ctID=238&Tab=0

Anybody know anything about these? I guess it is smaller and lighter than a 100W half-stack.

I think he'll be making a big mistake. If it sounds annoying it'll appear even louder.

If the pizza joint is Chuck E. Cheese's, that might be perfect.

I've got a Marshall AVT 100 that is a lot of amp, but smaller than a stack... Tube pre-amp and 100 Watt SS amplifier. I hope I'm not breaking the rules here by saying I might be interested in selling it...

    Re: Amp ideas?

OK, everbody can laugh, but I have a Champ 25 that I think the world of. My nephew left it at my house, and after he died, I found it. Could not locate a PT for it, finally had MM make one. When I repaired all the problems, it sounded OK, a little thin. My amp tech friend turned me on to a Mojo G12H clone, and the little amp just opened up. The clean channel is as nice as my Twin, and with pedals in front, it really sings. I've seen them for a couple of hundred on the bay.
Someday, I'm going to open it back up, and swap some parts in channel 2, and see if I can clean it up.

He bought the Kustom. I guess he couldn't wait.

Oddly enough, he's hooking me up with an amp for a third of the price he paid for the Kustom. A 25W reverb and trem tube combo. Details when it's in my hands.

    It's blue. It's Super.

    Any guesses?

I'd guess Bill M knows what it is. I don't want to say what it is until it's in my hands.

    Re: Amp ideas?

Last Standell amp I heard just blew me away. It was being used in a rockabilly setting with a Gretsch roundup.

He'll probably like the Kustom. Although on the inexpensive side, I've like all the Kustom stuff I've ever had. Ya just can't be too critical or snobby in your assessment of it.

    Re: Amp ideas?

Had a chance to play the Kustom for a couple of minutes. Cleans sounded kinda non-descript, but OK. I'm sure I could get a usable sound out of it. Dirt was kinda ugly and he had the chorus on.

He's into 80's hair metal. I think he loves it.
