    Cutting Pickguard for Floyd Rose

    Hi,

I'm customising my MIJ Strat that already has a Floyd Rose and an SSH arrangement and one vol and one tone pot.

I'm trying to get it ready for me next gig which is 7 July.

I'm going to a HSH config with a vol, a push/pull tone (coil tap) and a blender pot. I've ordered a new pickguard off ebay that seems very reasonable.

However, I've realised that the cut out is for a trad bridge and not a floyd rose. The only pickguards I can see online ready cut for a floyd rose are from Warmouth, $22 but nearly $40 shipping.....that's just silly plus it seems I'll be hit by a brokerage fee of at least another $20 at this end.

I can see from the web the difference in the cut out between the two bridge types. The question is, what is the best way to cut this myself? I'm reasonably handy, but I don't have any specialist tools such as a router.....

    Thanks in advance,
    Andy

I etch the shape that I want to cut onto the bottom of the pickguard with an Exacto knife or sharp object. I the use a Dremel or similar rotory tool with a small router bit to remove material until I'm very close to the shape. I use the Dramel and hand tools to perfect it.

yes, I'd use a file when you get close. That way you get straight lines.

Probably the best way would be to use a scroll saw with a very fine blade, then diamond files for final fit and finish.

Any friends with a scroll saw (if you don't have one)?

I'm afraid not.....I'm getting the idea that you guys in the US are more handy than we are! I guess if I'm careful I could use a coping saw and then do the filing after?

Yes, we Yanks do love our tools.

A coping saw would work if you take it slow and careful and use the files for final finish. Good luck.
