    Latest Project Pics

Here are some teaser pics of my latest hollow-body project.

The body is finished in nitrocellulose lacquer featuring carved mahogany sides with adjustable sound holes. The back consists of figured mahogany, ebony, and spalted maple while the front is book matched spalted maple.

The neck is finished in oil with an ebony heel and fretboard. The headstock features a spalted maple overlay finished in nitrocellulose lacquer. Scale length is 25.5".

I've been working on this project for close to two years as time permits in between customer projects. I hope to have it completed sometime in late spring.

    Wow, that's a beauty! I'll take one!

Can you explain to me why you did the heel with ebony? Is it a tone thing, a cosmetic thing, or did you need to add height to the neck?

    Great job!

    All of the above! :)

Also since this was a bolt on neck I wanted the inserts to reside in a material I felt was more stable than mahogany alone. I plan on keeping this one around for a long time. :wail2

That looks great! I'm also interested in what you're thinking as far as pickups, hardware, & control configuration. And what is the scale length?

Thanks for the compliments guys. Credit for the design goes to a good friend and mentor of mine, luthier Ari Lehtela. He has been instrumental in my development as a builder and has guided me through this project.

    The scale length of the guitar will be 25.5". The controls will consist of a volume and tone and will be located on the upper side of the guitar. The second pic has two openings beside the sound hole where these will reside. Since this is a jazz guitar the layout of the pickup, pickguard and bridge will be similar to this D'Aquisto whose designs I have always admired;

    It looks like nature.

Are you saying the adjustable soundholes will be on the side of the body?

We'll need more pix as near completion, and MP3's when it's done.
    Very cool.

Yes, the oval shaped holes in the pics on the upper and lower sides of the body will have adjustable ebony plates. I can then tailor the tone of the guitar depending on my preferences.

I'll be sure to post more pics when the guitar is complete. :wail2

    Re: Latest Project Pics

That's super sweet. I've really got to make good on my plans to drop by your shop sometime. Of course, now I'm too ashamed to bring in any of the
    parts-o-casters that I've hacked together.
