Anyone know how to relic ?

Ok, I set myself up on this one. I know the usual FDP answers will be somthing like, "play in bars for 20 yrs and earn it with mojo" etc.

What I want to know, is does anyone know how to do it the way Fender actually does their relic line? I wouldn't mind messing around with an MIM to make my own just for fun (not interested in the price tag of the real thing).

    TC

I don't know how Fender does it, but I do know they look like crap. Phony as hell. If you want a more authentic look, try this: stop using your guitar case & stand, let it happen at its own pace. Maybe throw it in your trunk for a while.

It's going to be hard with the different finish on the MIM models. I've heard that they use tuner cleaner cold spray that you can get at any electronics store alternated with either an oven or blowdryer to get the finish to check. On a thin nitro finished guitar, just leave it out in the cold and then bring it inside next to the fire, it will happen before your eyes.
I also seem to remember a post on the FDP where they showed a Fender Custom shop guy relicing a guitar at a trade show. I think he used things like his keys, etc to dent it up and sandpaper and other abrasives to simulate the neck wear. I've also heard that Fender puts a final finish coat over all of the abrasions to seal them from moisture. What model is it that you are thinking about doing this to?

    Electron,
Different strokes for different folks man. He and a lot of others including myself like the look.

    Gazza,
Do you still have pics of that relic you sold? Can you email them to me or post them? I'd love to see it to compare it to my new strat!

Wow that guitar looks like its been through some action. I'll have to play my "relic" for 30 years to get it to look like that

We'll have to bring him by the Dean booth and utilize the booth bunnies, that and a few of those $12 beers and it will be like taking candy from a baby :tw59

Seriously though, has he ever mentioned letting it go?
