    Nut Problem--String Jumping Out

My bottom E keeps popping out of the nut, and I need to deepen the slot.

I don't have any nut files; is there something else I could use, any Hint from Heloise?

(It's okay to laugh at the words "nut" and "deepen the slot." It's hard to write about a nut without innuendo)

before you do that - how many downward wraps on the post? my first inclination would be to check that.

It's on my lefty Strat with a righty neck. It's the longest string on the guitar--would putting a string tree there help? The neck is a 93 and had two string trees on it. The wind is perfect--2 winds.

I've heard of guys using nail files, needle files, anything to cut it really. I'm guessing that you flipped the nut around to use that neck lefty? If that's the case then the angle of the cut is probably also adding to your problem. A trick to getting good tuning stability, along with proper return to pitch when using the trem, is for the nut slot itself to be angled towards the tuners. Does that make sense? The back of the cut needs to fall away from the fretboard. Something in the 10-15° area.

I bought my files from luthier's mercantile. It's the set that has three files, each with two different sized cutting faces. I also have a "Japanese Feather file" for the high E and starting slots on new nuts. I know this is probably overkill for the average musician.

Maybe you can get a small file at the hardware store? You'll need to make a .045-.05" cut. HTH

And yes, use a string tree. That's a LONG string path!

String trees may have done the trick. I banged on the strings and did some wild picking on it, and the string stayed in place. All because everything on this guitar is bass ackwards.

    Re: Nut Problem--String Jumping Out

I'm surprised I figured it out. I'm all thumbs and numb-brained when I try to work on guitars. I just tried to wire my pre-wired scratch plate to the switch and on the pots. The guitar is dead, not even a crackle. My soldering is apparently no good. The bad news is, the one tech I know is sick and can't help me. I'm probably going to have to take a road trip to a shop and let whoever do the soldering. I just hope I haven't damaged anything.

You got a multimeter? Cuz this is the perfect time to learn how to trace a circuit! Or post a pic you know we love ya, warts and all, and would help you out!

    Re: Nut Problem--String Jumping Out

I appreciate it, chucko. I don't have a multimeter. I just got a message from a friend that he's got someone who'll do it cheap. I don't think I did anything too wrong. I may have damaged a wire in one place and got a bad connection in the other. It's probably a 10 minute job. But thanks for the offer.

No problem amigo! Wiring is pretty easy once you learn how to do it properly. Let me know if you need help, I'd be more than happy to if I can. Take care buddy.
