    worked on the frankenbacker.

today was a "no work" day, so i fired up the router and worked on the "frankenbacker" tonight. the idea is a jazz bass that sounds like a 73 ricky. the pickups i got from vintage vibe, very nice! it's all rough right now, but it's at least getting closer.

thanks guys. i think i'm going to leave it as a slab but will round the edges over. i'm also thinking of doing a faux binding on it. we'll see, i'm trying to get this done before wednesday.

Too bad you can't find that checkerboard binding anymore.

That's exactly why I bought my Squier Vintage Modified Jazz bass. The maple body and Duncan Designed pickups give it a treble punch very reminiscent of a Rickenbacker 4001.

Can you give us a few more details on the body wood and the pickups you're using here?

sure sage, the body is all maple, the neck is maple and pau ferro. the pickups i got from vintage vibe guitars and it's sort of a huge charlie christian in the bridge and a bass humbucker in the neck. not exactly what my ricky has, but close. i'm not looking to make an exact copy, just something in the vein.

yes neofauve, done done. this is a frankenstein.

    first coat of paint.

2nd color coat is on, one coat of silver metal specks for a faux metal flake and i'm on my 2nd out of 4 clear coats. tomorrow will be assembly and initial setup.

the neck is ready, still have to throw more clear coats on the body. somehow it needs more clear coats than the headstock? i don't know, whatever!

I'm guessing you use something other than polyurethane for a clear coat. I put some over an enamel on a PJ style body. I let it sit for a year, and then blew it off with air, and took all the clear right off! I put it back in the corner.

thanks dirtdog, the quote goes with the profile pic, hotrod!

it's all together, working on the setup today and tamale. the bridge pup is a little off, but i think it might be close enough.

    Cool pickguard.
I think I'm seeing a ridge wrapping around the body.
Did you mask the edges for a faux binding effect?

no, i just didn't finish sand... i'm lazy!

i got to plug her in today and give it a rip. sound wise it is pretty close to my ric. not exactly, but i wasn't counting on that. the vintage vibe pups are great quality pieces, awesome sound and top quality contruction. the output is more akin to my fenders whereas my ricky is freaking loud! i need to dial the pickups in a little more but they are darn close.

    Lookeen goood Chuck!

Interesting fact: The guy driving the Ferrari in dirtdog's pic was Sonic Youth's first drummer, he quit the band to focus on his acting career.
