WEM Dominator III

Is anybody out there still using a WEM Dominator III combo ?
I'm toying with the idea of changing the speaker and wondered if anyone had already been down this road & what their experience was.

I've seen pics of them with a 12" Celestion with a gold label
http://www.vintagehofner.co.uk/brita...ator/dom2.html
but mine has one of these:

Re: WEM Dominator III

I'll take that as a no then,

In that case, can anyone identify the make of this speaker?

Re: WEM Dominator III

I've got a '74 Mk. 3. I got it recently for £50.
Needed a full service, speaker repair and a new EL84.
The valves are all Mullard (though the replacement will be a Brimar) and the speaker is a Goodmans Audiom 50 12". We'll see how it sounds... I was actually looking to get mine up and running today.

Not sure on your speaker though. Does it have any markings?

Re: WEM Dominator III

Looking at my Goodmans that speaker could be one...
Is yours a 12"? Smooth or ribbed cone?
Could be a Goodmans that the plastic magnet cover has fallen off.

Re: WEM Dominator III

Thanks Tommy,
It's a 12" smooth cone and looks exactly like the one in the link above.
It has had no cover over the magnet since I've had it.(early '90s)
The only markings are the letters P A on the metalwork on the plate
below the U shaped (? magnet). (where there appear to be screws in the picture). I've still got the Mullards in mine, It's getting a bit "hissy" nowadays.

Aidan.

That's the resistors and the filter caps. When was it last serviced?

My speaker is an Audiom 12P... Get where I'm coming from?
Any markings on the rear of the cone? Does it have a cork rim on the front gasket?

Re: WEM Dominator III

I'll have to have a better look at mine to check the gasket etc. It was repaired about 8-10 years ago when one of the channels stopped working and hasn't had much use since, but the repair won't have included resistors & caps. It was done by a chap who lives in some tiny village in North Yorks, & was recommended by my local Luthier.

Re: WEM Dominator III

Cool. If you want it serviced I'd happily do it for the cost of the parts. I've just serviced two of them.
I'll try and get some pics of mine (it's in bits just now).

Re: WEM Dominator III

Nope,
it looks like this

note the letters PA near the lower screw holding the magnet onto the cone frame.
Sorry- I got a bit too close & it's out of focus.

Re: WEM Dominator III

I have no idea what that is!
I can see how that might be a bit lo-fi for it though with the smooth cone. That appears to be non-original speaker wire so the speaker could easily be replaced. (It's got a bit of a Maplin feel to it, don't you think?).

I got mine up and running sucessfully. The Goodmans is a bit blech but I've some spare Weber Sig 12FBs I'll try and let you know how I get on.

Re: WEM Dominator III

I think that may be the original speaker despite the non- original wire
as other WEM amps have the same type. i.e -
