I need to replace the 4 small tubes in a recently purchased
Bassman. What is the best lineup to get a "wooden" rockabilly sound?
position 1 being closest to the right side wall.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Barry

I don't think you can beat NOS JANs for preamp tubes in a BF Fender with the possible exception of the NOS Amperex 7025s for V1 and V2. I use this mix in all of mine, even the re-issues. Mil-spec tubes are more durable and generally idle more quietly than the commercial stuff. YMMV.

Not sure which artist's sound in particular you might be referring to, but as far as equipment choices go, a good way to get close to most rockabilly tones is get a hollow or semi hollowbody guitar. The difference among brands of 12AX7 or AY7 tubes aren't going to sound specifically like one genre of music or the other. Not like the choice of guitar/amp to begin with anyway. What is the best lineup to get a "wooden" rockabilly sound?
However if you're looking for a cleaner tone of any kind you can replace the first 2 preamp tubes--probably 12AX7's--with 12AY7's. V1 being the preamp or small tube furthest away from the power or big tubes, they will be V1 and V2.
What model bassman do you have Barry?
You got the wrong amp for that sound.
The first two tubes on the right as viewed from the back are the 1st and second gain stage for the first channel and second channel as viewed from the front.
These two tubes will to a very large percentage set up the whole tonal structure of the amp. That being said, I to think you have the wrong amp for what you ate looking for, but the amp could be modified to get you 90% of the way to your goal!

Shit I need to pay attention a little better. I even knew this thread by the title...Originally Posted by boobtube21

Again a semi-hollow guitar might also be a good guitar choice, if I understand the term "wooden" right. A lot of rockabilly guys play these, like a Gretsch, but a telecaster does great rockabilly too.
And of course you're going to need some kind of slap back delay....I recommend an Echoplex to handle that job.
Doesn't Setzer play through a blonde Bassman...?
Blond something. Two of them I think, and a Roland Space Echo.
Setzer plays a pair of 6G6-A Bassmans loaded with Celestion V30s and the there's no reason in the world why the OP of this thread with his '66 AB165 couldn't get similar tones, assuming proper amp tweaking, careful speaker/cabinet selection, and the right pedal(s) out in front.

Of course he could. Especially if he plays at moderate volume! These amps don't just have to be played cranked up!
Well, I replaced the 4 small tubes and the tone sounds good to me.
But now when I put the volume up to only 3, there is a constant static type sound. Not a hum, but static. Any ideas - is it the power supply?
Obviously I am new to this tube amp thing, and I admit it.
Thanks.
Barry
Microphonic pA tube mos likely...
Static? Like crackling? Or hiss?
What brand tubes did you use?
In my experience, Sovteks are not a good choice for Fenders.
Great for nasty distortion (like a Peavey 5150), but not good for clean amps at all.
Well I'm no amp tech but I would guess if you got some noisy tubes, that could increase hiss. I once paid an extra $4 per tube to get "low noise and microphonics" on some 12AY7's, and if memory serves all 6 tubes were pretty hissy and very microphonic.
Also, I don't know about your bassman but on my Vibrolux if I've got the volume/bass/treble knobs turned up on the normal channel it still adds hiss even though I'm playing out of the vib channel. I always just chalked that up to bad lead dress in the SF amps but could be I've got some noisy tubes in there.
Anyways maybe try turning all the knobs to zero on the channel you're not using. That might get rid of some hiss...maybe technically not solve the problem but at least give you an idea of what part of the amp is noisy.
In my experience - all new tubes are hissy - some worse than others and they vary batch to batch - not necessarily brand to brand - on 12AY's we're stuck with - as far as new production tubes are concerned - EH's or erm... EH's - so - we're all pretty stuffed... I've had some very good Sovvie 12AX7WA's that were better than JJ ECC83S's or Tung-Sol 12AX7's - there doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason to it and recent price increases seem to have brought us even worse tubes so... - go figure...
